In the Peloponnese, ancient cultural sites, marked mountain trails and designated natural areas offer different reasons to travel. Their distinctive features can help you plan a trip around your own interests.

Ancient Sites and Theaters

The Theater of Epidaurus is still used for performances of ancient dramas. An annual festival has been held there since 1955. If attending a performance is important to your trip, check the dates for your planned travel period. The history of the Sanctuary of Asclepius at Epidaurus adds another distinctive dimension: it is considered the earliest organized sanatorium and is associated with the history of medicine.

In Olympia, you can explore both the history of the Games and significant archaeological finds. The archaeological site preserves sports facilities that were used to prepare for and hold the Olympic Games. The Archaeological Museum of Olympia displays finds from the Sanctuary of Zeus, including the Hermes of Praxiteles and the Nike of Paionios. The display of individual works may be affected by conservation measures.

Mycenae was the most important and wealthiest palace center of the Greek Late Bronze Age. The fortifications of the citadel at Tiryns offer a different, tangible point of reference: their circumference is approximately 750 meters, and they were completed at the end of the 13th century BC. These details make the contrast between a historical context and the scale of a fortification clear.

Medieval Towns and Regional Culture

Mystras preserves medieval ruins in an impressive landscape in the southeastern Peloponnese. In Monemvasia, the entire old town, including the bridge and rock, is listed as an archaeological site. Both places appeal to a different historical interest than the Bronze Age palace centers or ancient sporting venues.

In Dimitsana, the Open-Air Water Power Museum illustrates the importance of water power in traditional society. Restored traditional facilities and water-powered mechanisms are among its exhibits. It offers a distinct perspective on technological and everyday history alongside the archaeological themes.

Hiking Trails and Natural Areas

The Menalon Trail is a 75-kilometer network of marked paths connecting nine mountain villages. It passes through Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Zygovisti, Elati, Bytina, Nymphasia, Magouliana, Valtesiniko and Lagkadia in Gortynia. It was the first hiking trail in Greece to be certified by the ERA. This gives travelers a clearly defined hiking focus, while the villages listed also provide practical reference points for choosing a subregion.

Birdlife is another notable feature: Taygetos is designated an Important Bird Area, and 87 bird species have been recorded there. Its eastern side is part of the Natura 2000 network of habitats. At Gialova Lagoon, a nature trail starts at the Hellenic Ornithological Society’s information center near the old pumping station. The lagoon is also designated as a Special Protection Area and an Important Bird Area.

Four distinct habitats in the southwestern Peloponnese are included in the European Natura 2000 network, among them the ecosystems of Gialova Lagoon. The Voidoikilia Bay biotope complex comprises the lagoon, Navarino Bay and the island of Sfaktiria; this complex is also included in the Natura 2000 network. The bay is almost circular, with an angle of 300 degrees. The remaining 60 degrees form its opening to the Ionian Sea.

Near Agios Nikolaos, a petrified forest on the coast has been included in an atlas of the geological monuments of the Aegean. Information panels can be found at the archaeological site of the Heraion of Perachora. Measures have also been implemented to make the monuments easier to access and to highlight their ruins and history. The options range from geological and protected natural areas to archaeological sites with visitor information.
