The Menalon Trail makes Arcadia especially rewarding to explore on foot: the 75-kilometre route connects nine traditional stone-built villages. It lies in Arcadia on the Peloponnese and passes through Stemnitsa, Dimitsana, Zygovisti, Elati, Vytina, Nymfasia, Magouliana, Valtetsiniko and Lagadia. Along the route, village architecture meets a variety of landscapes.

Stone Villages, Gorges and Nature

The landscape is particularly varied in the Lousios Gorge, the Mylaon gorges and the rocky terrain of Lagadia. These areas have the greatest diversity of flora and fauna in Arcadia, including many rare or unusual species. The habitats along the Menalon Trail are considered relatively undisturbed and support the biodiversity of the geographical region. For nature lovers, this offers a different way to experience Arcadia than visiting its ancient sites: the focus here is on habitats and landforms.

In the Lousios Gorge, a path connects the Prodromos Monastery with the Philosophou Monastery on the opposite side. The monasteries there are almost entirely carved into the rock. The Prodromos Monastery is built almost entirely into a recess in a cliff about 600 metres high; part of the building is actually inside a cave. As local trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check them before setting out.

Hydropower and Archaeological Collections

The Open-Air Water Power Museum in Dimitsana is near the Lousios River and shows the importance of hydropower in traditional society. Restored traditional facilities and water-powered mechanisms bring the subject to life. The focus is therefore not only on landscapes and buildings, but also on the use of a natural energy source.

The museums of Arcadia offer further ways to explore the region's past. The Archaeological Museum of Tripoli houses objects from excavations at various sites in Arcadia. The Archaeological Museum of Tegea focuses on the founding and development of the city, described as the most powerful in ancient Arcadia. Particular attention is given to the Sanctuary of Athena Alea, designed by the famous sculptor Skopas.

At the archaeological site of Mantineia, remains of the fortification wall, agora, theatre and public buildings are known. Visitors can begin their visit at Gortsouli Hill, about one kilometre north of Mantineia. The archaeological site at Gortyna includes baths and the Sanctuary of Asclepius. The ancient theatre of Orchomenos dates from the Hellenistic period and is one of four ancient theatres that can be visited in Arcadia.

Karytaina Castle is also one of the region's striking historic buildings; it dates from the 13th century. The castle offers panoramic views of the amphitheatrically laid-out village and the Lousios Gorge. The archaeological site of ancient Lykosoura includes a museum with finds from local excavations. Visits are possible from 1 November to 31 March by prior arrangement with the Archaeological Museum of Tripoli.

Winter, Water and Arcadian Cuisine

The Mainalon Ski Resort attracts visitors for skiing, snowboarding and other winter sports. Its slopes are considered suitable for beginners and experienced skiers; weather and operating conditions vary. Check current conditions before making plans. Rafting and kayaking are also possible on the Lousios River. These activities offer a different focus from the museums and archaeological sites, adding experiences on the water to the picture of the region.

Regional cuisine is also part of the Arcadian experience. Traditional Arcadian dishes can be sampled in tavernas. Chicken and rabbit with chylopites are among the region's best-known dishes. Together with the stone villages, rock-hewn monasteries and museum collections, they offer different insights into the cultural and everyday life of Arcadia.
