Nestani combines a mountain village at the foot of ArtemĂsio with a distinctive hill, a nearby monastery, and a climbing region with several sectors. For trip planning, the village can be explored through two main interests: its townscape, with Goulas and a chapel, and activities such as climbing and hiking. If you are looking for accommodation in Nestani, you can first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.
Village and Goulas
Nestani is laid out in an amphitheater shape and features distinctive traditional architecture. Its defining features include a large square with plane trees. The settlement’s layout, building style, and square give the village a clearly recognizable townscape.
The distinctive hill, or rock, of Goulas rises behind Nestani when viewed from the village center. The renovated chapel of Saint George stands at its summit. Together, Goulas and the chapel are prominent landmarks in the local landscape.
Climbing Area and Directions
Nestani’s climbing region has 80 routes in six sectors: Pyrgos tis Nestánis, Moreas, Argon Pedion, Voulomeni, Lithari, and Oneiropolos. The number of routes may change as new routes are developed. The six sectors give the climbing region a clear layout, which can be helpful when planning different climbing days.
Voulomeni, Argon Pedion, and Oneiropolos are considered suitable for children and families because they have a relatively short approach along a path and level areas beneath the cliffs. This assessment applies to the sectors named. To reach the climbing area at Voulomeni Park, take the exit towards the village immediately after the Nestani toll plaza on the Athens–Tripoli motorway. There is a designated parking area on a side road at the park. Check current navigation before setting out, as road layouts may change.
Hike and Gorgoepikoos Monastery
Gorgoepikoos Monastery is nearby, about a half-hour walk from Nestani. It was founded in 1030 and stands on an archaeological site with a significant ancient cult tradition. Its founding date and cult history give the monastery a distinctive historical connection for a visit in the area.
According to the route description, a hike from the village square leads up Goulas, above the village and Gorgoepikoos Monastery. It takes almost two hours and requires a guide. Check trail conditions and guide availability before setting out. The time estimates refer to different activities: the approximately half-hour walk to the monastery and the almost two-hour hike up Goulas. This distinction helps you keep the two activities separate when planning your stay.
Find Hotels by Travel Interest
For climbing days, getting to Voulomeni Park is a practical planning consideration; for the hike up Goulas, the guide requirement and the advice to check trail conditions beforehand are important.
