Kalefeld can be explored through specific cultural and nature themes: the Churches & Chapels cycling route connects churches and chapels in the municipality, while Weißenwasserkirche and the Bible Garden offer a distinct religious focus. There are also places with architectural history and geological themes. When planning your trip, you can first consider which of these perspectives interests you most.
Churches, Bible Garden and Cycling Route
Weißenwasserkirche is an old baptismal church in the Kahlberg area. The Bible Garden is right next door and is part of the Via Scandinavica pilgrimage route. It is laid out in the shape of a fish. The church, garden and pilgrimage route are therefore linked by their location: the garden is next to the church, and the Via Scandinavica passes through this place.
The Churches & Chapels cycling route passes churches and chapels in the municipality of Kalefeld and is signposted in both directions. If you visit all 15 stops, the route is approximately 41 kilometres long. Each stop has an information board describing the building there. This allows you to appreciate the sites not only as individual buildings, but also to follow the explanations along the route. Check the current signs before setting out.
Architectural History and Earth History
On the grounds of the Ernhaus is a barn containing agricultural machinery. The Ernhaus is used for events; its upper floor is being prepared for exhibitions and collections.
Willershausen Water Castle is believed to have probably been the late medieval outer bailey of Westerhof Castle. Its name recalls the moat that surrounded the manor house until the beginning of the 19th century. The traditional interpretation thus links the site’s present-day name to a former architectural feature. The cautious historical connection is particularly important here: the site is considered a probable outer bailey.
The Willershausen Clay Pit Natural Monument offers a different perspective on time. It is an internationally significant Pliocene fossil site. While the water castle is associated with a medieval interpretation, the clay pit points to the history of the Earth. Those interested in history can therefore explore different topics: the development of a site and the geological significance of a fossil locality.
Landscape in the Municipality of Kalefeld
A large recreational area has been designated in the municipality of Kalefeld. It covers extensive parts of the municipality’s forested northern, southern and eastern areas. This description refers to the municipality as a whole and complements the individual cultural sites with a landscape perspective. Those interested in culture can make their choices based on specific churches, buildings and historical interpretations; nature enthusiasts can also explore the municipality’s forested areas.
Harzhorn in the Wider Northeim Destination
In the wider Northeim destination, the Roman battlefield at Harzhorn is located in southern Lower Saxony, in the district of Northeim, on the B248 between Oldenrode and Ildehausen. The information building on site serves as the starting and finishing point for guided tours and events. Around 600 finds have been excavated in the battlefield area, which measures 1.5 kilometres by 500 metres. Guided tours are regularly offered at the excavation site. Check which tours are available before your trip.
The information building at Harzhorn is accessible without barriers. However, the guided tour route through the site is not fully accessible without barriers because some of the forest paths are steep. This distinction is important when planning a visit to Harzhorn in the Northeim area.
