Katlenburg-Lindau brings together river landscapes, cycle routes and traces of history in two distinct places: on the castle hill in Katlenburg and at the Mushaus in Lindau. Around the Rhume, Oder and Söse rivers, wooded ridges and valleys shape the foothills of the Harz. This gives you several ways to plan your trip: spend time outdoors or learn about the history of the area. You can combine both or focus your stay on cycling routes, hikes or architectural history.

Cycle Routes and River Landscapes

Important tourist cycling routes run through Katlenburg-Lindau along the Oder, Söse and Rhume rivers, in the direction of the Harz and Eichsfeld. The Mühlenweg leads from Katlenburg through Lindau to Bilshausen and runs alongside the Rhumeaue nature reserve. It thus connects several named places with a route along the river meadows.

A longer cycling route is the Rhume-Leine Adventure Trail. It passes through Katlenburg-Lindau and is around 50 kilometres long, from the source of the Rhume to the Northeim Lake District. For most of its length, it runs on cycle paths away from motorised traffic, follows the Rhume for some sections, and passes weirs and former mills. These routes offer different points of reference when planning your ride: the MĂĽhlenweg, with its place names and location along the Rhumeaue, and the Adventure Trail, with its approximate total length, endpoints and riverside sections.

The municipal cycle network includes existing and planned cycle paths totalling 260 kilometres. Its extent may change as routes are completed or revised. Check the current route and path conditions before setting out on a specific ride, as the route, surface and traffic conditions may change.

Hiking and the Foothills of the Harz

You can also make exploring the landscape on foot a focus of your trip. The wooded ridges and valleys around Katlenburg-Lindau invite you to go hiking. The Rhume, Oder and Söse shape the river valleys in the foothills of the Harz. If you want to mix cycling and hiking days, you can include different activities in your stay without having to follow the same route for both.

Historic Sites in Katlenburg and Lindau

Katlenburg’s historical development began with a complex on the castle hill, first documented in 1105. Katlenburg’s historic complex includes a former count’s castle, a monastery, a palace and an estate. The church on the castle hill preserves a Romanesque crypt dating from the settlement’s founding period. Here, traces of different aspects of the area’s history come together: the development of the complex and a specific architectural feature from the early settlement period.

In Lindau, the Mushaus offers a different historical focus. The 12th-century building is the surviving main structure of a moated castle. If you are interested in the architectural history of the area, you can explore two distinct points of interest: the Romanesque crypt on the castle hill in Katlenburg and the Mushaus in Lindau.

Katlenburg’s Fruit Wine History

Another local story is connected with the KATLENBURGER winery. It was founded in 1925 in Katlenburg, among the orchards of the founding family. The first KATLENBURGER sparkling apple wine was also developed in Katlenburg. The winery is known for its fruit wine culture, as well as fruit and honey wines. If you are looking for a particular product or planning a visit, check the current selection, as the visitor and product offerings may change.
