The Hardenberg estate lies in the Leine Valley, amid a densely wooded landscape of gentle hills. A stay in Nörten-Hardenberg combines views and trails in the countryside with a distinct cultural theme: the tradition of distilling. The castle and Leine Valley trails connect visitors with the landscape, while the Hardenberg Distillery offers another way to explore the town’s history. When choosing accommodation, you can tailor your stay to suit these interests.

Landscape and trails

A walk around Hardenberg Castle offers views across Nörten-Hardenberg, the Leine Valley and Göttingen. The four-kilometre Hardenberg Warteturm–Hardenberg Castle circular route also starts in Nörten-Hardenberg. For planning your walk, the views, route length and starting point provide practical reference points. The Leine Valley around the Hardenberg Burghotel offers trails for leisurely strolls and longer hikes. The options range from a relaxed walk to a longer hike; if you have a specific distance in mind, you can use the four-kilometre circular route as a guide.

The castle and distilling tradition

The Hardenberg castle ruins are believed to be more than 1,000 years old, with origins dating back to the 10th century. The distilling tradition dates back to 1700. These two historical milestones meet here: the castle’s early origins and the later tradition of distilling. The ground at the castle ruins is uneven, so sturdy footwear is recommended.

Guided tours take visitors through the old grain distillery and the Hardenberg Distillery. The distillery combines traditional production methods with modern refining techniques. Ingredients are grown, processed and bottled on the Count’s estates. The distillery tour focuses on production, while the castle ruins are chiefly a historic site. The grounds of the Hardenberg Distillery are not accessible to visitors with disabilities; check the latest visitor information before travelling.

Accommodation and travel planning

Are the castle and trails in the Leine Valley your main focus, or would you particularly like to take a distillery tour? Compare accommodation locations with the attractions that matter to you. The Hardenberg estate is about a ten-minute drive from Göttingen. If Göttingen is also part of your plans, this approximate driving time offers an additional point of reference for planning your trip.

Culture in Northeim

Northeim’s town wall was built between 1252 and 1305; about half of it is still well preserved. The former Sankt Spiritus pilgrims’ hostel houses the Museum of the City of Northeim and is one of Lower Saxony’s most significant Gothic half-timbered buildings. Since August 2001, Theater der Nacht has been based in a converted former fire station in Northeim. It works exclusively with puppets, masks and objects, and explores legends, myths and fairy tales. Northeim Touristik offers guided tours of the town, museums and forests.
