Trappenkamp combines local history with outdoor activities. The G5 bunker museum tells the story of the site’s former military use and Trappenkamp’s founding in 1956; sculptures, the Erlebnisschmiede and ErlebnisWald offer other attractions. The nearby Segeberger Forest adds opportunities to enjoy nature.
From Munitions Site to Local History
The G5 bunker museum was one of around 100 former munitions storage buildings at the former munitions depot. Its exhibition traces the site’s history from its military use through the settlement of refugees to the founding of Trappenkamp in 1956. This sequence gives the museum visit a clear narrative thread: the transformation of the site.
Another section of the exhibition is devoted to objects from the Gablonz glass industry, which were manufactured in Trappenkamp until the 1950s. This adds a topic from local production to the area’s history. Tours for interested visitors, groups and school classes are available by arrangement, so please coordinate your visit in advance.
Sculptures and the Blacksmithing Tradition
There are cultural points of interest outside the museum, too. At the corner of Hermannstädter Straße and Kieler Straße, a Mönchsweg sculpture shows pilgrims along the route the way. The Dukatenesel stands in front of the Sparkasse in Trappenkamp. The Erlebnisschmiede Trappenkamp adds another stop: a workshop museum created by a family with 150 years of blacksmithing history. Different themes come together in the town: a route and pilgrimage trail, a sculpture in front of the Sparkasse, and the history of blacksmithing.
Forest, Tours and Leisure
Trappenkamp is right next to the Segeberger Forest, offering access to outdoor activities. Seven tours lead to sights and through scenic areas around Trappenkamp. This offers a different perspective from visits to the museum and sculptures: you can focus your plans on nature and places of interest without limiting your stay to a single stop.
ErlebnisWald Trappenkamp grew out of the former Trappenkamp Wildlife Park and is now part of the Schleswig-Holstein State Forests. Its attractions include walk-through wildlife enclosures, nature experiences in the forest, a large adventure playground, and places to picnic or barbecue. Wildlife and nature experiences sit alongside play and rest facilities. Free parking is available; check the current parking conditions before setting out.
The Waldschwimmbad offers more than swimming, too: facilities include mini golf, beach soccer, volleyball, chess, table tennis, table football, play equipment, sandpits and a children’s pool. Activities range from sports and games to options for children. You can weigh this focus against the museum and nature attractions when planning your days.
A Practical Base for Your Stay
If you are travelling by motorhome, there is a free parking area for up to twelve vehicles at the sports centre. Check current availability before you arrive. This lets you choose your overnight base to suit your travel style, while leaving your choice of activities open—from local history and crafts to nature and leisure.
