Forests, Landscapes and Trails

Segeberg District brings together dense forests, clear lakes, lively hedgerows and lush meadows. The Segeberg Forest covers 40 square kilometres and offers a wooded setting for nature-focused excursions. In the northeast of the district, the hilly landscape of Holstein Switzerland Nature Park extends into the district.

On foot, you can choose between longer hikes and short walks: the hiking trails and paths in Segeberg District cater to both. Guided hikes and nature tours offer insights into local flora and fauna. You can explore the landscape on your own or get to know it better on a guided tour.

There is also a specific selection of cycling routes: Holsteiner Quellenland, north of Bad Segeberg, offers seven interesting circular routes. As the selection of routes may change, it is advisable to check the latest information before planning your trip.

Regional Produce and Events

Gut Stockseehof sells sweet cherries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries directly from the farm and at the farmers’ market, along with other fresh regional products. Check the dates and programme for your visit.

An open-air summer stage is a highlight of Bad Segeberg’s event calendar: the Karl May Games take place every summer at the foot of Kalkberg. The open-air theatre can accommodate up to 7,700 spectators per performance. The visitor complex includes Indian Village, with the Western town of LaGrande, and Nebraska House, which houses the “The World of the Indians” exhibition. Check the dates for the relevant year in advance.

Cultural History and Unique Experiences

St. Mary’s Church in Bad Segeberg was built from fired clay bricks in 1156. It was the first brick church of its kind north of the Elbe and the first basilica with a vaulted ceiling. The Museum Alt-Segeberger Bürgerhaus explores the building’s history and that of its residents from 1541; the museum also features an exhibition on Segeberg’s 800-year development.

During a guided tour of the C. & F. Blunck Wool Spinning Mill, you can follow and experience the entire wool-processing process in a historic mill complex. Check in advance whether a tour is available on your chosen date. The Trappenkamp Forge Experience features blacksmithing and metal objects in its permanent exhibition. Its cultural programme includes, among other things, jazz brunches, art and photography exhibitions, Irish folk music, other musical events and readings; check dates and any arrangements in advance.

The heritage-listed Seedorf Gatehouse houses a small museum on the history of the building and the Seedorf estate. Find out about visitor arrangements before your visit. The permanent exhibition at the Otto Flath Art Gallery features around 40 wooden sculptures, a selection of watercolours and drawings, and a documentary on Otto Flath’s life and work.

Noctalis offers an interactive exhibition with play and learning stations where visitors can explore the world of bats and their habitat. The Kalkberg Cave in Bad Segeberg offers another glimpse into the lives of bats: it serves as a winter home for more than 30,000 of them.
