Jörl is ideal for a break where walking, landscapes and architectural history each offer something different. The Jörl Nature Trail is a well-signposted circular route of around ten kilometres. St. Katharinen in Jörl showcases late Gothic brick architecture and historic furnishings. The dune at Rimmelsberg adds a distinctive natural feature, with heathland, juniper and a horseshoe-shaped hollow.

On foot along the Jörl Nature Trail

The circular route is about ten kilometres long. If you prefer a shorter walk, you can take a shortcut between Rupel and Großjörl. This lets you adapt the distance to your day’s plans while keeping the route’s character as a signposted trail. The Paulsgabe petrol station is the recommended starting point; cars and bicycles can be parked there.

Along the way, 13 information boards cover regional history and geology. The trail therefore combines a specific walking route with topics that extend beyond the landscape itself. There are no places to buy food or drinks along the route. Plan your food and drinks for the walk rather than counting on stopping somewhere along the way.

The dune at Rimmelsberg: heathland and hollow

The dune at Rimmelsberg is a 17-hectare FFH site in Schleswig-Holstein. It is part of the Natura 2000 network and the Dünen am Rimmelsberg FFH site. It has been protected since 1938. Its vegetation includes juniper bushes, sandy heathland and extensively managed grassland; heathland and coppice woodland also characterise the area. Grassland connects the site.

At its centre lies a horseshoe-shaped hollow. Together with the historic oak coppice, the dune provides a refuge for rare plants and animals. The landform and plant life give this natural area two clearly distinct features: the hollow shapes the terrain, while juniper, sandy heathland and grassland define its vegetation. The area is freely accessible at all times.

St. Katharinen and its architectural history

St. Katharinen in Jörl is a late Gothic brick church. Historic features inside include painted galleries and late Gothic chancel decoration. Other features include a late 13th-century oak triumphal group, a carved pulpit and an altar dating from 1773. These furnishings span different periods, from the late Middle Ages to the 18th century.

The building’s history also spans several periods: the south porch dates from 1756, and the west wall and west tower from 1914. These different building phases complement the late Gothic features and historic furnishings. The church is also suitable for weddings.

The attractions each offer a clear focus for planning: the nature trail follows a specific circular route that can be shortened; the church centres on brick architecture and its furnishings. The dune adds to the nature theme with its vegetation and landform. You can plan your time in Jörl according to whether you mainly want to walk, enjoy nature or explore architectural history.
