More than 25 kilometres of the Danevirke rampart still remain today. This tangible scale offers a way to connect with the history of Schleswig-Flensburg. The Idstedt Memorial and Museum, as well as places with a film history, add their own distinctive touches.

Border fortifications, museums and film history

In the larger travel destination of Schleswig-Holstein, the Danevirke was a border fortification at a historic bottleneck between the Baltic Sea inlet of the Schlei and the lowlands of the North Sea near Schleswig. Haithabu was an important Viking Age maritime trading centre at a historic bottleneck between the Schlei and the North Sea. Together, the border fortification and maritime trade represent different aspects of the history of the wider Schleswig-Holstein travel destination.

In Idstedt, the historic memorial and its museum provide information about German-Danish history surrounding the uprising of 1848 and the Battle of Idstedt. This brings a particular chapter of history into focus. Film productions offer a very different perspective on places and their stories: from 1986 to 2012, Kappeln served as a filming location for the television series “Der Landarzt” under the name “Deekelsen”. Arnis and the Schlei were filming locations for a German adaptation of “Five Friends”.

From the fjord to the Schlei

The Schleswig-Flensburg district includes the Flensburg Fjord, with its unspoilt steep coasts and beaches, as well as the Eider-Treene-Sorge river landscape. In Schlei Nature Park, gentle hills, forests, hedgerow landscapes, and rapeseed and cereal fields alternate with sandy beaches and bathing coves. The Schlei’s brackish-water areas provide a habitat for numerous endangered bird species. The coast, river landscape and varied surroundings of the Schlei thus offer different perspectives on the region’s nature.

The Holnis Peninsula is the northernmost tip of Schleswig-Holstein’s young moraine landscape. More than 130 bird species can be observed there, including around 65 breeding species.

At 773 hectares, Geltinger Birk is the largest nature reserve in the Schleswig-Flensburg district. Well-maintained paths lead through the area; on guided walks, you can learn about the local flora and fauna. Comparing independent exploration along the paths with a guided walk featuring insights into nature can help you choose how you would like to experience the landscape.

Hikes and cycling routes

Guided nature tours are offered in Schlei Nature Park. The Viking-Frisian Way, the Ox Road and 15 signposted themed cycling routes also cross the landscape.

One specific cycling loop is the 25-kilometre SchleiUferTörn. It runs around the central part of the Schlei and starts in Arnis. These details can help you fit the SchleiUferTörn into your route planning. Arnis is also a destination for water sports enthusiasts today. Here, a focus on the water and a designated cycling loop go hand in hand, while the film history associated with the Schlei provides another thematic connection.

A leisure park with a wide range of activities

The Tolk-Schau family and leisure park offers rides, playgrounds, park trains, fairytale cabins and more than 100 life-size dinosaurs. The selection includes a variety of attractions, from rides and play areas to large dinosaur figures. When planning your visit, you can consider which of these park attractions interest you most.
