Oberscheidweiler lies on a ridge between the Alf and Sammet Valleys; forests and meadows define its surroundings. The trails offer different experiences: the Mill Trail leads from the village into the Alfbach Valley and on to Oberscheidweiler Mill, while the 2-Brooks Trail is a circular route through valleys and higher ground. If you are considering Oberscheidweiler as a base for days outdoors, you can choose a route based on its destination, circular format and the features described for it.

Hiking trails between the valley and higher ground

The Mill Trail leads from Oberscheidweiler into the Alfbach Valley and on to Oberscheidweiler Mill. White signs marked “Mühlenweg 11” indicate the route. As trail conditions can change, check them before setting out.

The 2-Brooks Trail is a circular route that can be started in Oberscheidweiler. It passes through natural valleys and higher ground in the Sammet and Alfbach Valleys. Viewpoints and rest areas lie along the route; herons and deer can also be spotted along the way. The circular route combines scenic views with specific opportunities to pause and take a break.

The Red Oak Trail is a circular hike approximately six kilometres long. It starts and ends at St. Rochus Church in the village centre; small white signs marked “Roteichenweg 13” show the way. Along the route, you pass a naturally grown hedge of red oaks. A bench offers an unobstructed view of the Sammetbach Valley.

At 4.5 kilometres, the Sammetblick is shorter than the Red Oak Trail loop, which is around six kilometres long; the Sammetblick includes a short ascent. The hike is marked on site. The Sammetbach rises at Holzmaar near Gillenfeld and later flows into the Alf.

Finding your way around the village

Free parking is available at St. Rochus Church at BrunnenstraĂźe 3. Local conditions may change; check them before travelling. The church is also the starting and finishing point of the Red Oak Trail. If you are exploring on foot, you will also find the signs for this loop there.

One local speciality is the dialect “Owascheepa Platt,” also known as Oberscheidweiler Platt. It is said to be spoken only in Oberscheidweiler; its pronunciation differs from the dialects of neighbouring communities. Alongside the trails, the language offers another distinctive connection to the village.

Bernkastel-Wittlich as the wider region

In the wider travel destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich, the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the HunsrĂĽck, rich in forests and meadows, meet. The 816-metre-high Erbeskopf invites visitors to hike and offers a variety of winter sports. At Erbeskopf, the National Park Gate provides information about nature and the environment; its interactive multimedia exhibition covers the themes of forests and wetlands.

Culture and history also shape what there is to explore in the Bernkastel-Wittlich destination. The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502; Klausen remains a destination for pilgrims every year. In Manderscheid, two medieval castle ruins face each other on steep rocky promontories above the Lieser. The Manderscheid Castle Trail is a moderately challenging 5.4-kilometre circular hike around the castles; the stated duration is two hours. The Castle Via Ferrata comprises three stages and around four kilometres in total, one kilometre of which is secured with cables.

For wine enthusiasts, the vinotheque in the historic vaulted cellars of St. Nikolaus Hospital offers tastings of wines from the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer. The selection includes 100 wines, from quality wines to ice wine. These regional destinations complement the picture of Oberscheidweiler without implying that attractions in other places are part of the local hiking trails.
