An elaborately detailed wayside shrine and an old chapel give Karl a distinctive cultural and historical character. At the same time, the village offers varied surroundings for hikes and nature-focused visits. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider whether to focus on local architectural and devotional history, a specific hiking route or other themes in the wider destination.
Cultural History in Karl
The wayside crucifix shrine on the village square was erected in 1703 and comes from the Wolff workshop in Wittlich. Its imagery includes scenes from the Passion of Christ, winged angel heads and Saint Catherine. There are also grapes, apples, foliage and intricately crafted garlands of fruit. Religious imagery and botanical ornaments appear side by side, making the shrine a historically rich subject full of detail.
The old chapel contains a Rococo column altar dating from the late 17th century. The dates highlight different periods: the altar dates from the late 17th century, while the wayside shrine was erected in 1703. Together, these two architectural and artistic features are a reason to explore Karl not only as a starting point for hikes, but also for its sacred furnishings.
Hiking Trails and Landscape
Karl offers varied surroundings for hikes and nature-focused visits. The Lieser Trail runs close to the village, following the natural course of the Lieser through deep forests, idyllic valleys and striking rocky landscapes. This description of the scenery gives a different impression from a single route distance: it draws attention to the woods, valleys and rocks along the way.
A shorter hiking stage covers 7.8 kilometres from Karl to Himmerod. Different from this is Stage 12 of the Eifelsteig: it runs from Manderscheid through the Lieser Valley to Himmerod, is 18.2 kilometres long and is rated as moderately difficult. The hiking time is approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes. The different starting points and route lengths help distinguish the two options; no hiking time is given here for the Karl–Himmerod stage. Check the route and your plans before setting out.
The Burgberg viewing platform sits high above the Lieser Valley and offers sweeping views across the Eifel. Nearby, there is a hut with wooden benches where hikers can take a break; the platform is close to the Eifelsteig. Views, a place to rest and proximity to the trail are separate factors to consider when choosing a hike.
More to Explore in the Wider Bernkastel-Wittlich Destination
In the wider destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich, the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the forest- and meadow-rich HunsrĂĽck meet. For nature lovers and hikers, the 816-metre-high Erbeskopf offers hiking; it also has a range of winter sports. The National Park Gate at Erbeskopf provides information about nature and the environment and features an interactive multimedia exhibition about forests and bogs.
Bernkastel-Wittlich also offers a range of cultural attractions. The pilgrimage church of Maria Heimsuchung in Klausen was consecrated in 1502, and Klausen remains a destination for pilgrims every year. In Kues, the Cusanus Birthplace is used as a museum and event venue; it has a permanent exhibition about Nicholas of Cusa. The Cylinder House is dedicated to 90 years of German automotive history and showcases more than 100 cars, motorcycles and vans.
The Vinothek, in the historic vaulted cellars of St. Nicholas Hospital, offers a combination of culture and wine. Wine tastings featuring wines from the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer are available there; the selection includes 100 wines, from quality wines to ice wine. Another option in its own right is the Maare-Mosel Cycle Route: it runs for 58.5 kilometres along a disused railway line from Daun to Bernkastel-Kues. For cyclists on the route, a bike bus takes them from Bernkastel-Kues back to the starting point; the return trip can be booked in advance. Check the timetable for your travel dates.
