Eisenschmitt can be explored through two themes: the history of ironworking on the Salm and the literary traces of Clara Viebig. The Mühlenpfad adds a circular walk through floodplain scenery and the valley to the village’s history. During your stay, you can choose between historical and literary connections and a hike through the river landscape.

Traces of ironworking

Eisenschmitt was first documented in 1372 under the name “Yssensmyt uff der Salmen.” A larger ironworks with a hammer mill and forge began operating in the village center in 1503; it remained in operation until 1670. The iron industry in the Salm Valley was eventually discontinued in 1868. Historical ironworking involved local iron ore, charcoal from the surrounding forests and the water power of the Salm. The dates distinguish the larger works in the center from the iron industry in the valley as a whole. Together, the ore, forest and river show which local resources shaped the former trade.

Clara Viebig in the village landscape

In front of the church stands the Eisenschmitt Fountain, a local historical landmark designed by artist Johann Baptist Lenz. Its three tiers depict the ironworks, ironworking trades and scenes from Clara Viebig’s novel “Das Weiberdorf.” Published in 1900, the novel contains landscape descriptions and fictional portrayals of women around Eisenschmitt. The Clara Viebig Center adds context to this literary connection with background information, original books from Clara Viebig’s time and other exhibits. The novel offers a fictional view of the area; the center focuses on background information and original books. Exhibits and visiting arrangements may change; check before your visit.

Woodland and river-valley character

The area around Eisenschmitt combines forests, meadows and a river valley within a varied low-mountain landscape. The village is considered an idyllic, wooded mountain village away from the bustle of the world. The character of the village therefore encompasses both specific historical and literary connections and a landscape of forests, meadows and river valley.

Hiking the Mühlenpfad

The HeimatSpur Mühlenpfad is an easy, family-friendly 6.7-kilometer circular hike with cultural highlights. It follows the Salm and passes through extensive floodplains. Along the way, there are views across the Salm floodplain and into the gently incised valley. At kilometer 4.8, the Clara Viebig Fountain is a highlight of the route.

Trail conditions may change temporarily; check them before setting out. Parking for the Mühlenpfad is available at Hotel Molitors Mühle in Eichelhütte, Eisenschmitt. Bernkastel-Wittlich as the wider setting

The wider travel destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich brings together the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the forest- and meadow-rich Hunsrück. The 816-meter-high Erbeskopf invites visitors to hike and offers a range of winter sports.
