Sellin combines resort architecture, maritime history and nature at Selliner See. Several perspectives can help you find your bearings: Wilhelmstraße leading to the steep coast, museums covering past working life and nautical subjects, and walks in the area around the lake. At the Seebrücke, the diving gondola offers an additional perspective on the Baltic Sea. These highlights provide different thematic focal points for your stay.
Wilhelmstraße, resort architecture and access to the coast
In Sellin, Wilhelmstraße, lined with magnificent houses dating from the early days of resort architecture, leads to the 30-metre-high steep coast. From there, you can reach Sellin Seebrücke or the promenade at Südstrand via the steep staircase known as the “Himmelsleiter” or by lift. This means that along one specific stretch of the route, you can choose between two different destinations: the Seebrücke or the promenade. The street itself provides the architectural focal point, while the steep coast marks the transition to both destinations.
Maritime history and amber
Since 2010, the Seefahrerhaus Sellin museum has been housed in a thatched-roof half-timbered building on Selliner See. It offers a vivid impression of the working and living conditions of fishermen and seafarers in times gone by. Numerous exhibits of maritime folk culture and nautical aids are on display across 120 square metres. The focus is therefore not just on objects, but also on historical working and living conditions. The Amber Museum is also located in the centre of Sellin; it is considered the only amber museum on the island of Rügen. The distinction is clear when choosing by subject: the Seefahrerhaus focuses on historical working and living conditions, while the Amber Museum is considered the only one of its kind on Rügen.
The Baltic Sea beneath the surface
At Sellin Seebrücke, the diving gondola offers insights into the Baltic Sea habitat and its animal and plant life. What you can observe depends on visibility and the time of year. The gondola also shows a 3D underwater film about the Baltic Sea. This combines a nature-viewing experience that depends on conditions with a film screening as two elements of the same offering.
Walks around Selliner See
Southwest of the seaside resort, a walk around Selliner See passes through the Neuensiener and Selliner See nature reserve, where a diverse range of flora and fauna can be observed. A roughly 10-kilometre route around Selliner See can start at the Bollwerk in Sellin. Trail conditions can change, so check them before your walk. The nature in the reserve and the approximate length of a lake walk can thus be taken into account as separate planning considerations.
The wider region: Vorpommern-Rügen
The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Rügen extends beyond Sellin. The district includes the island of Rügen as well as the nearby islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz; there are an estimated 60 or so museums in the district. The old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”. On Rügen, the beech forests in Jasmund National Park are also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”. Vorpommern-Rügen is also known for the Störtebeker Festival. Together, these examples illustrate the cultural and scenic diversity of the wider region.
