Baabe combines a fine sandy beach with water activities, a promenade and distinctive landmarks. When planning a stay, it is worth thinking about time at the beach, routes by the water and the village’s special places together.
Beach, water sports and promenade
Baabe has 1.5 kilometres of fine sandy beach. 17 beach access points lead to the shore. If you want to spend your holiday primarily by the water, you’ll find a clear focus here; the length of the beach and the number of access points also give you a concrete idea of what the town’s beach has to offer.
Stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing and sailing are offered or practised at Baabe beach. The availability of activities may vary by season. So if you’re planning to try one of these water sports during your stay, take your travel dates into account.
The Baabe beach promenade is an extension of Göhren’s “Bernsteinpromenade” and runs from Baabe to the Baltic Sea resort of Sellin. It makes a good starting point for walks towards Sellin or Göhren. This offers a different way to spend your stay than a day at the beach: the promenade is a starting point for exploring on foot in both directions.
Harbour, fishing and Mönchguttor
A rowing-boat ferry runs from Baabe harbour to the opposite shore of the Having, taking guests and bicycles to Moritzburg. Ferry operating information may change, so check the latest information before making plans. Baabe Bollwerk, or the harbour, offers moorings for 25 pleasure boats and two passenger ships.
At Fischerstrand in Baabe, near beach access point 5, you can watch fishermen at work. Fishing has a long tradition in Baabe; whether you can watch depends on fishing activity at the time. Fischerstrand therefore offers both a glimpse of present-day work and a connection to the area’s fishing traditions.
Another landmark is Mönchguttor. It marks the boundary between the Mönchgut peninsula and the rest of Rügen. Erected in 2003, the gate is decorated with wooden figures of a farmer’s wife, a fisherman, a monk and a knight. These figures are significant representations of the region’s history and culture. The gate’s construction date, boundary function and figures make it a tangible point of reference if you’d like to learn more about Baabe and its place in the region.
Events and library
The Baltic Sea resort of Baabe offers a year-round programme of events, including festivals, spa concerts, children’s activities and readings for guests of all ages. The programme changes, so check the current events calendar for your travel dates if you’re planning to attend a particular event or type of event.
The Mönchgut Library is located in the Haus des Gastes in Baabe. Access to the collection is available to holders of a valid spa card. The collection includes around 9,450 books, including approximately 4,200 works of fiction, 3,000 non-fiction books and 2,250 children’s and young adult books. If the library is an essential part of your plans, check the latest information on access and the collection in advance, as both may change.
An overview of the wider destination
Baabe is located in the wider destination of Vorpommern-Rügen. The district includes the island of Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz. The number of museums in the district is estimated at around 60. This gives an idea of the wider destination’s cultural diversity, without suggesting that these museums are located in Baabe.
Other regional highlights include the old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, which forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”, and the beech forests in Jasmund National Park on Rügen. They belong to the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”. Vorpommern-Rügen is also known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival. These themes broaden the picture of Baabe with cultural and natural attractions in the wider destination.
