There are several distinct themes to choose from for a stay in Göhren: the wooded Nordperd combines high cliffs with views of the Baltic Sea, the fine sandy beach slopes gently into the water, and Buskam and the village church offer reasons to explore local history. These highlights can help you plan your visit around your own interests. If you’re looking for a hotel in Göhren, you can start by deciding whether landscapes, the beach or history will be the focus of your trip.

Nordperd: Clifftop, Forest and Baltic Sea Views

Göhren’s wooded Nordperd rises up to 60 metres above sea level and forms the easternmost point of the island of Rügen. A clifftop circular hiking trail runs around the Nordperd, offering views across the Baltic Sea. For travellers who enjoy walking, this is a distinctive landscape highlight: the trail links the clifftop with views of the Baltic Sea, while the forest helps shape the character of the Nordperd.

The forest is part of the core zone of the Southeast Rügen Biosphere Reserve and remains largely untouched. The circular trail and the core zone offer two different highlights: walking along the clifftop and experiencing the largely untouched forest.

Coast: Beach and Mole

Göhren’s fine sandy beach slopes gently into the water, making it especially suitable for young explorers and adventurers. This gives the beach a different appeal from the clifftop: here, the focus is on sand and the gentle slope into the water, while the Nordperd is about the forest and views of the Baltic Sea.

At the foot of the Nordperd, right on the Baltic Sea, is a 450-metre-long mole. Built in 1907 and 1908, it protects the cliff. Alongside the coast’s natural landforms, you can also see a structure with a clear protective purpose and learn about its construction.

Buskam and the Village Church

The erratic boulder Buskam lies in the Baltic Sea, east of Göhren pier. Its name comes from the Old Slavic “bogis kamin” and means “God’s stone”. Small hollows on the boulder’s upper surface suggest that it may have been used as a place of worship as early as the Bronze Age. Buskam therefore offers two distinct points of interest: the meaning of its name and its possible early use.

Göhren’s village church was consecrated in 1930. This simple, single-nave place of worship has two brick-roofed towers. Its architectural form offers a different way to explore local history from Buskam: here, the focus is on a church building; there, on the possible Bronze Age use of an erratic boulder.

Getting Around by Local Bus

The BUSkam local bus runs through Göhren town centre, from the North Beach to the South Beach. If you’re planning to take the bus, check operating hours and journey times in advance, as they may change.

Göhren within the wider Vorpommern-Rügen travel destination

Vorpommern-Rügen is a broader destination than Göhren: the district includes the island of Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz, as well as the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain. The district is estimated to have around 60 museums. Regional cultural and natural highlights include the old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”, and the beech forests in Jasmund National Park on Rügen, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe”.
