Neuenkirchen brings together St. Johannis Church, with its eventful architectural history, and a cycling loop that passes through the village. This gives trip planning two distinct focal points: local cultural history and cycling on the “Altes Land: Stade Loop.” In the wider destination of Stade, landscapes and maritime themes add to the picture of the region.

St. Johannis: Founding, reconstruction and organ

In 1270, a knight proposed building St. Johannis Church and endowed it for Benedictine nuns. The founding year and the community for which it was intended mark the beginning of its history. The church was subsequently demolished and rebuilt twice: once in the 19th century and once in the 20th century. Its architectural history therefore spans its medieval beginnings and two reconstructions in later centuries.

The organ adds another dimension to this historical picture: St. Johannis received one of the first new mechanical organs in Germany in the 20th century. The circumstances of its founding, its reconstructions and the history of its organ offer different points of connection in time for anyone interested in the history of a church. The story is not limited to 1270, but also includes developments through the 20th century.

Another building with a place in the village’s history is the childhood home of Heinrich Peter Hellwege at Dorfstraße 56. Today, it serves as a village community centre. Together with the church, it gives a picture of different historical landmarks: St. Johannis represents a long history of architecture and organs, while the house is shaped by its present-day community use.

Cycling between the village and the region

The “Altes Land: Stade Loop” cycling route runs through the Altes Land, along the Elbe and the Fruit Route, and passes through places including Neuenkirchen. Check the current route and conditions before setting off.

For cycling in the Altes Land, the Elbe Cycle Route is particularly recommended in the wider destination of Stade. The two recommendations cover different areas: the Stade Loop specifically passes through Neuenkirchen, while the Elbe Cycle Route recommendation applies to the Altes Land as a region. If you would like to combine cycling plans with local history, you can treat the local route as a separate focus and distinguish it from the regional recommendation.

The wider destination of Stade

The Stade district is characterised by the broad marshlands along the Elbe, the cultural landscape of the Altes Land, river valleys in the geest and wild raised bogs. These landscapes offer opportunities for local recreation and nature watching.

The coastal motor ship MS IRIS-JÖRG is part of the Kehdingen Maritime Museum. Visitors can see it in the listed harbour right next door. At the museum, you can also earn the Kehdingen Seafarer’s Certificate. Thus, alongside local history and cycling, the wider destination of Stade also offers maritime history and a hands-on activity.

Along the Wischhafen Maritime Walk, information signs on a range of maritime topics can be found at many points. Information boards and a leaflet provide details about the region’s crafts, trade, historic locks and ferries; the leaflet is available at the tourist information office and the Kehdingen Maritime Museum. This information gives the maritime theme its own focus within the destination of Stade.

The Wischhafen, Alter Schulweg bus stop is about 200 metres from the museum. Route 2025 runs from there to Stade and Freiburg. Check the current timetable before travelling so you can plan your connection for your visit.
