Estorf offers two very different discoveries: a group of Bronze Age burial mounds in a meadow landscape at the edge of the woods, and the hand-pulled barge ferry across the Oste. The burial mounds take you back to prehistory; the ferry is a historic crossing connecting the banks of Estorf and Gräpel. This gives you a choice between an archaeological monument and a direct river crossing as distinct reasons to visit.
Burial Mounds in the Landscape
The Estorf burial mound group is a Bronze Age burial mound monument. It is located in a meadow landscape at the edge of the woods. One possible interpretation is that the group once marked a prehistoric route. This possibility adds a question about the group’s significance at the time to its historical context.
The burial mound group can be reached from Estorf by car, bicycle or on foot. It is located right on the Alten Kirchweg. The route around the burial mound group is 0.1 kilometres long. This short distance can therefore be factored in as a separate part of your visit planning.
The Hand-Pulled Barge Ferry
The Estorf-Gräpel barge ferry is a historic crossing over the Oste, connecting the banks of Estorf and Gräpel. It is part of the German Ferry Route and an attraction for hikers and tourists. A special feature is its mechanism: the boat, with its metal bottom, is pulled by hand using a chain anchored in the riverbed. Both the connection between the two banks and the way the crossing is made are part of what makes this destination distinctive.
If you plan to make the ferry a set part of your itinerary, check the current operating times in advance. The burial mound group and the ferry offer different highlights: one focuses on a Bronze Age monument with a possible connection to a prehistoric route, the other on the historic crossing of the Oste.
Other Perspectives
Another nature and learning destination is in Oldendorf: the Moor Water Forest Experience Trail has twelve activity and information stations. There are places to sit and lie down for breaks. While the individual Bronze Age monument is the focus in Estorf, the Oldendorf trail is arranged around twelve stations.
A Wider Perspective: Stade
Across the wider destination of Stade, the landscape of the district is shaped by vast marshes along the Elbe, the cultural landscape of the Altes Land, river valleys in the Geest and wild, unspoilt raised bogs. These landscapes offer opportunities for local recreation and nature watching.
One maritime attraction in the wider destination of Stade is the Wischhafen Maritime Walk. Along the route, information signs on a variety of maritime topics can be found at many points. The coastal motor vessel MS IRIS-JÖRG is part of the Kehdingen Coastal Shipping Museum and can be visited in the listed harbour right next door. Visitors can also take the Kehdingen seafarer’s certificate at the museum. Information boards and a leaflet available at the tourist information office and museum provide information about the region’s crafts, trade, and historic locks and ferries.
