For a trip to Drochtersen, you can organize your plans around water and walking trails, a trip into the moorland, or local history. The Elbe island of Krautsand is enclosed by the Wischhafener Süderelbe, the Krautsander Binnenelbe and the Ruthenstrom. It also has a miles-long sandy beach. The activity you choose to focus on mainly affects your seasonal and day-to-day planning.

Krautsand: beach and walking trail

The Krautsand Island Trail is an easy 3.25-kilometer circular route. Its attractions include the coastal motor vessel MS Jan-Dirk and the upper and lower lighthouses. If you would like to extend your walk, you can reach the new harbor via the beach or the dike path. Check local conditions before planning this extension.

The miles-long sandy beach and the walking trail offer different ways to spend time outdoors. The route is designed as a circular trail, while the extension to the new harbor follows one of the two paths mentioned. You can choose the shorter loop or plan an additional section without assuming a specific walking time.

Boat trip or moorland railway

In summer, the flat-bottomed boat Tidenkieker departs from the Krautsand landing stage for island cruises. The season is part of planning this trip: check current departure times before choosing your travel day. The Moorkieker offers another way to experience the landscape. The converted peat railway offers an experience of the Kehdingen high moor; visitor operations may be seasonal, so it is advisable to check availability in advance.

The two activities differ in their format: aboard the Tidenkieker, you travel on the water, while the Moorkieker takes you through the high moor by rail. Together with a walk on the Island Trail, they offer different options for planning your trip. Which one suits you depends on whether you would rather focus on a boat trip, a journey into the moorland, or a walk.

Village history and crafts

The Barnkrug shot tower is part of a former munitions factory. At the Assel Local History Museum, the focus is on fully furnished rooms containing items from village homes, farms and workshops. The museum also includes a fully equipped shoemaker’s workshop. The former factory site and the furnished rooms thus offer different insights into local history.

The location of the bus stop is also a useful point of reference when traveling to the local history museum: Asseler Hafenstraße stop is about 150 meters from the museum. This is an approximate distance; check current stop information before your journey. The Drochtersen, Kirche bus stop offers connections to Stade, Freiburg, Itzwörden, Drochtersen and Finkenwerder. Check routes and times before you set off.

Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans

If you include bus connections in your day’s plans, check your desired journeys against the current timetable. This lets you choose a hotel to suit your own itinerary, without assuming that every visit follows the same schedule.
