The Hallbergmoos Sports and Leisure Park offers several ways to get active outdoors. Restored areas along the Isar floodplains and the “Traces of Our Past” history trail offer a different focus: observing nature and learning about the history of Hallbergmoos and Goldach. To decide whether Hallbergmoos is right for your trip, you can weigh up the park, nature and local cultural heritage.

Park areas and outdoor activities

The Sports and Leisure Park covers 16 hectares; the Finnish-style track that surrounds BĂĽrgerpark is 1.7 kilometres long. The area figure refers to the park, and the distance refers to the track. A public playground is located in the southeastern part of BĂĽrgerpark, near the beach volleyball courts. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle from the eastern entrance on Enghofer Weg. The Sports and Leisure Park also has a boules court, where players of all ages can get active outdoors.

Gravel pit and Isar floodplains

The restored areas of the Hallbergmoos gravel pit lie directly next to the Isar floodplains, connecting them to the Southern Isar Floodplains Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The SAC includes, among other things, hardwood and softwood floodplain forests, extensive stretches of water, restored gravel areas and large reed beds. The mix of floodplains, water, gravel and reeds forms a natural area with a range of habitat types. The gravel pit is a popular destination for nature tours; it can be reached by S-Bahn, bicycle or motorised transport.

History trail and local history

The Hallbergmoos “Traces of Our Past” history trail is a 20.43-kilometre circular cycling route, rated easy and listed as taking two hours. At 18 stops and information boards, you can learn about historical events in Hallbergmoos and Goldach. The trail identifies the Alte Wirt as the oldest building in Hallbergmoos. The Catholic Church of St. Theresa in Hallbergmoos was consecrated in 1833. While the history trail puts events into context at several stops, the church consecration date marks a single point in history. At 20.43 kilometres, the history trail is considerably longer than the 1.7-kilometre Finnish-style track; the two routes also differ in design: one is a circular cycling route with a historical focus, while the other is a track that encircles Bürgerpark.

The wider destination of Freising

In the wider destination of Freising, the Amper Valley offers a distinct connection with nature: it is designated a landscape conservation area and is used for hiking and cycling. It is home to numerous specially protected animal and plant species, including four of the 16 dragonfly species in Bavaria that are threatened with extinction. In Freising’s historic old town, civic and canons’ houses dating from the Gothic to the Baroque period surround Marienplatz; the Marian column there dates from 1674. The Freising City Museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history. On Freising Cathedral Hill, the Cathedral of St. Mary has a crypt and the Beast Column. At the Schafhof, the Centre for Contemporary Art presents year-round exhibitions featuring works by international and local artists. These cultural venues in Freising add sacred architecture and contemporary art to the picture of the historic old town and museum.
