The castle’s history, a late Gothic church, and a variety of trail themes give Wang a distinct character as a place to stay. On foot, a circular walking trail passes historical and scenic landmarks, leading to the confluence of the Isar and Amper rivers. By bike, a roughly six-kilometre section of the Ammer-Amper Cycle Route connects Wang with the Isar Cycle Route. This makes it easy to distinguish between walking and cycling as the focus of your trip.

Isareck Castle and late Gothic architecture

Isareck Castle is located on a hill near Wang, at the confluence of the Amper and Isar rivers, and is privately owned. Asmus Hälmayr built it for Duke Albrecht V between 1559 and 1570 as a four-wing complex. The castle complex includes St. George’s Chapel and a 19th-century English-style castle park. The building’s history and the park, which dates from a later period, represent different eras.

The Catholic branch church of St. John the Baptist in Wang offers a different perspective on historical architecture. This late Gothic hall church has a recessed polygonal choir and a side tower. The choir roof structure dates from 1430 to 1433, while that of the nave dates from 1457/58; the cemetery wall is also medieval. These dates give the choir and nave their own distinct chronology.

Circular walking trail and cycle route connection

The circular walking trail leads from Wang via former salt roads, vineyards, the 1313 Battle of Gammelsdorf battlefield, and prehistoric settlements along the Isar and Amper rivers to Volkmannsdorf near Moosburg an der Isar. The Isar and Amper rivers meet there. On the return to Wang, the trail passes Isareck Castle. Historical landmarks and the riverside landscape provide different points of interest along the route.

For cyclists, a roughly six-kilometre section of the Ammer-Amper Cycle Route runs north of Moosburg an der Isar via Wang and connects to the Isar Cycle Route. Unlike the circular walking trail, this section is defined by its connection to another named cycle route. Before setting out, check the latest route information for the cycling section and local conditions for the walking trail.

Freising as a separate regional context

Within the broader destination of Freising, the Amper Valley is a focus for nature and outdoor activities. It is designated a protected landscape and is used for walking and cycling in the Freising district. The many animal and plant species there that merit special protection include four of the 16 dragonfly species threatened with extinction in Bavaria.

The city of Freising also has its own cultural highlights. Around Marienplatz, the historic old town features the homes of burghers and cathedral canons spanning the Gothic to Baroque periods; a Marian column dating from 1674 stands there. On Freising’s Cathedral Hill, Freising Cathedral has a crypt and the Beast Column. The Freising City Museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to the city’s history.

For contemporary art, Schafhof in Freising hosts year-round exhibitions featuring works by international and local artists. The annual Johannismarkt and Advent market are also held there, where craftspeople present selected one-of-a-kind pieces. The Weihenstephan Art Trail passes almost 30 contemporary artworks across the campus. Each of its two circular routes takes a little over an hour.
