Eching combines heathland and large protected areas with waterside recreation areas. Activities vary by location and season: people swim at Lake Eching in summer, while outside the swimming season, the grounds are ideal for walks. A local history museum also complements the area’s nature-focused attractions.

Heathland and Protected Areas

The 26-hectare Garchinger Heide lies southeast of Eching. It is home to numerous plants considered Ice Age relics, including pasqueflower, pheasant’s eye and stemless gentian. The 620-hectare Mallertshofer Holz with Heathland nature reserve lies south of Eching. It was designated in 1995. Natural remnants of the heathland and diverse animal and plant communities have been preserved there, including endangered and declining species.

The two places offer distinct nature experiences: specific plant species take center stage in Garchinger Heide, while Mallertshofer Holz is known for its preserved heathland and diverse ecological communities. Garchinger Heide, Mallertshofer Holz and Echinger Lohe are all within Eching’s municipal area and lie in the Natura 2000 protected area.

Lakes and Activities in the Municipality

Within the municipality of Eching, Lake Hollern is home to an extensive, intermunicipal recreation area between Eching and Kreuzhof (B 13). The first construction phase includes sunbathing lawns, a beach, a water rescue station, a kiosk and a large car park. A well-maintained beach and natural areas lie just a few metres apart on the grounds. If you plan to use individual facilities, check in advance whether they are currently operating.

People swim at Lake Eching during the summer months; outside the swimming season, the large grounds are ideal for walks. The time of year therefore determines the main activity at the lake. Check local conditions in advance. In the district of Dietersheim, the Isar floodplains, a protected area under the Habitats Directive, invite visitors to cycle or walk.

Local History and Regional Highlights

Local history also has its own point of interest: the Eching Local History Museum opened in 1995.

Freising as a Distinct Regional Highlight

In the district of Freising, the Amper Valley is designated as a landscape conservation area and used as a local recreation area for hiking and cycling. It is home to numerous animal and plant species in need of particular protection, including four of the 16 dragonfly species threatened with extinction in Bavaria. This gives the district of Freising a distinctive nature theme, centered on exceptional biodiversity, alongside Eching’s focus on heathland and lakes.

Freising is also a distinct destination for architecture and urban history. Freising Cathedral on Cathedral Hill features a crypt and the Beast Column. The historic old town around Marienplatz is lined with burghers’ and canons’ houses dating from the Gothic to the Baroque periods; a Marian column from 1674 also stands there. The Freising City Museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history. This lets you distinguish Eching’s nature attractions from Freising’s cultural highlights according to your interests.
