Freising brings together local history and art in several forms: archaeological finds and documents at the City Museum, architecture on Cathedral Hill, and an art trail on the university campus. There are also guided tours and paths along the Moosach. When planning your visit, you can first decide whether collections, guided tours or walks are your main interest.

Museum and Cathedral Hill

The Freising City Museum presents prehistoric archaeological finds, precious works of art and crafts, and important documents from the city's more recent history. With its distinctive towers, Freising Cathedral is one of the city's major sights. Inside are the mysterious Romanesque Beast Column and the Baroque furnishings by the Asam brothers.

Cathedral Hill also tells the story of Freising's past: it symbolizes the city's 1,300-year history as a prince-bishop's town and was a center of learning for many centuries. The Diocesan Museum on Cathedral Hill presents exhibitions on art and cultural history, exploring the interplay between faith, art and society. Its collection comprises around 50,000 objects from all areas of ecclesiastical art and culture. Thus, the City Museum focuses on archaeological finds and documents from the city's more recent history, while the Diocesan Museum brings together a broad range of ecclesiastical art and culture.

Exhibitions and art trail

The Schafhof in Freising hosts year-round exhibitions featuring works by international and local artists. The Weihenstephan Art Trail offers a different way to experience art: the walk on the university campus in Freising-Weihenstephan passes nearly 30 works of art. The art trail consists of two circular routes, each taking about an hour. This time estimate applies to each route.

These offer two distinct ways to enjoy art: exhibitions at the Schafhof or a walk past the works on campus. The art trail also gives a specific time frame for each of its two circular routes, while the Schafhof hosts exhibitions year-round.

Guided tours and brewing culture

Guided tours of Freising take visitors through the town center and over Cathedral Hill. The options also include tours of historic Freising breweries and along waterways. Specific dates may vary; check which tours are running before making your plans.

A brewery described as probably the oldest in the world is located on Weihenstephan Hill. Its beer draws visitors from far away to the Bräustüberl. This is a separate focus for your trip alongside the museums and art; bear in mind that a tour of historic breweries and the brewery on Weihenstephan Hill are different offerings.

Paths, garden and getting there

The route to Weihenstephan Hill passes the rose garden and follows the FĂĽrstendamm, a nature trail along the Moosach. A circular path ends at the Staudensichtungsgarten, a teaching and trial garden for perennials and woody plants, with a wide variety of plants and vivid colors. The paths and garden complement a visit whose main focus may otherwise be the museums, Cathedral Hill or guided tours.

Regional trains run from Freising station towards Munich and Landshut. There is also the RE 22 line between the airport, Freising and Moosburg, as well as the Munich Transport and Tariff Association's S1 S-Bahn line. From Freising station, the City Museum is seven minutes away by train and S-Bahn. Since routes and services may change, check the current connection before travelling.
