Grafenhausen offers several different highlights for a trip: swimming at Schlüchtsee, a nature trail, mountain biking and the Hüsli local history museum in Rothaus. The lake, trails and museum history offer different starting points that you can weigh according to your own preferences when planning.
At Schlüchtsee: swimming lake and walking route
Schlüchtsee is a swimming lake in a nature reserve. From Grafenhausen, the promenade path leads there on foot in about 30 minutes. This is an approximate walking time for this route. At the lake, there is a kiosk with a sun terrace, changing cabins and sanitary facilities. As these facilities may change, it is best to check their current status locally before your visit. For planning purposes, Schlüchtsee therefore combines a swimming destination with a specific walking route from Grafenhausen.
Circular trail and mountain bike trail
The Schlühüwanapark in Rothaus is a 2.6-kilometre circular trail. The route includes a barefoot path and a forest xylophone. The circular layout and these two features offer different points of interest to help plan your walk. If you prefer mountain biking, there is the 17-kilometre Mountainbike-Gipfeltrail Hochschwarzwald, which also passes through the municipal area of Grafenhausen. The trail opened in September 2015. The 17 kilometres refer to the trail’s total length; its route also passes through Grafenhausen’s municipal area. Current trail conditions may vary, so it is advisable to check them before setting out.
The Hüsli: architectural history and collection
The Hüsli local history museum in Rothaus has its own architectural history. In 1912, Helene Siegfried, a concert singer living in Berlin at the time, had the house built as a holiday home according to her personal ideas about Black Forest architecture. It was therefore originally a holiday home, not a building designed as a museum. Its collection consists of objects from the everyday lives of Black Forest farmers. The building’s history and the collection offer different perspectives: its origins reflect Siegfried’s personal understanding of Black Forest architecture, while the objects relate to rural life in the Black Forest. The Hüsli thus offers both a glimpse into the history of the house and into the way of life represented by its collection.
Different measures for planning
When planning, it is worth distinguishing walking time from route length. The approximately 30 minutes refers to the walk from Grafenhausen to Schlüchtsee. The 2.6 kilometres describe the circular trail in Schlühüwanapark, while the 17 kilometres refer to the total length of the Mountainbike-Gipfeltrail. These figures answer different questions: how long does it take to walk to the lake, and how long are the two trail options? You can therefore distinguish between the options according to activity and the level of detail you want for planning, rather than comparing the figures as if they measured the same thing.
