Küssaburg Castle, a permanent Roman exhibition and Küssenberg Nature Reserve give Küssaberg a range of visitor highlights. The museum is in Rheinheim; the castle is also a landmark of the region. To narrow down your choices, you can focus on two themes: history at specific sites, or protected landscapes with their trails and habitats. Both are part of what makes Küssaberg distinctive.

Roman Exhibition and Küssaburg Castle

The Küssaberg Museum is located in the Old Town Hall in Rheinheim and features a permanent exhibition about the Romans. Küssaburg Castle is another historical highlight: it is considered a landmark of the region, stands at an elevation of 634 metres and was probably built in the first half of the 12th century. Roman history and castle construction from different periods are therefore two historical themes to explore.

Plan a Visit to Küssaburg Castle

Küssaburg Castle offers a virtual 3D tour of its old walls and towers. To reach the ruins, take a walk from the parking area by the “Küssaburg” inn to the castle. If you plan to use this starting point, check the local parking situation in advance, as it may change.

From May to September, the Küssaburg Association (Küssaburgbund e. V.) offers public guided tours at 4 pm on the last Saturday of each month. Check the dates for the relevant year before your trip. This lets you plan a guided tour as part of your visit without relying solely on the recurring seasonal schedule.

Landscape and Habitats on Küssenberg

Küssenberg Nature and Landscape Reserve lies within the municipality of Küssaberg, in the districts of Bechtersbohl and Küssnach. The nature reserve covers around 209 hectares; adjacent sections of the associated landscape reserve cover around 28 hectares. These two figures refer to different parts of the protected area.

The forests around Küssaburg Castle are part of the protected area. On south-facing slopes, the reserve continues beyond Küssnach, encompassing orchard meadows, dry, warm forests and orchid-rich calcareous grasslands. The landscape is therefore not limited to a single habitat type: forests and the open, warm, sun-exposed slopes define different parts of the protected area.

The protected area is home to more than 15 protected orchid species and more than 50 breeding bird species. Nature enthusiasts can explore a range of subjects, from the plant life of the orchid-rich calcareous grasslands to the birdlife and its breeding species. The diversity of habitats can be considered alongside the specific figures for the size of the protected area.

Recreation Trails and Hiking Routes

Numerous recreational trails cross Küssenberg and are suitable for walkers, hikers and cyclists. The ridge trail from Küssaburg Castle to Geißlingen is particularly popular. The Bohnerz Trail is a different type of route: an approximately five-kilometre circular hike from Küßnach via Küssaburg Castle and Bechtersbohl, returning to Küßnach. The practical difference is in the route: the Bohnerz Trail returns to Küßnach, while the ridge trail runs from the castle to Geißlingen. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
