In Ibicoara, waterfalls, trails through the landscape and cultural events are among the many sides of a stay. If you’re looking for hotels in Ibicoara, use your planned outings to help guide your trip: the destinations described differ in trail distances, walking times and access routes. Especially for waterfall excursions, it’s worth distinguishing the details for each route and checking current trail and road conditions.

Waterfall Excursions and Trail Distances

Cachoeira do BuracĂŁo is considered a landmark of the municipality of Ibicoara. The route there is listed as 3 km each way, or 6 km round trip; the average walking time is 40 minutes to one hour each way. You must be accompanied by registered guides. There are several places along the trail by the river where swimming is permitted; conditions may vary. Before your excursion, confirm current guide arrangements and check the condition of the trail.

Cachoeira da Fumacinha is one of the municipality’s tourist attractions. From Ibicoara, the route heads toward the village of Baixão, then continues on foot. Two access routes are described: an upper route of 8 km and a lower route of 9 km. Another route description follows the 40 km trail from Mucugê to Campo Alegre on the second day, leading to the top of Cachoeira Fumacinha, where the canyon can be seen. From there, the route returns to Toca do Vaqueiro and continues to Campo Alegre, a district of Ibicoara. This route differs from the access via Baixão; check trail conditions and overnight arrangements in advance.

Landscape and Regional Orientation

Parque Natural Municipal do Espalhado is 29 km from Ibicoara’s administrative center and covers 612 hectares. The protected area permits controlled use of its natural resources, as well as nature recreation and ecotourism. Four major waterfalls are also listed in Parque Municipal do Espalhado: Fumacinha, Licuri, Rio Preto and Véu de Noiva.

Cachoeira do Véu de Noiva, within the municipality, is listed as 30 meters high, with a pool below that stretches 50 meters. It’s about 30 km from the town of Ibicoara to the parking area, roughly an hour by car depending on road conditions. From the parking area, a 3.5 km trail leads to the main waterfall. The distance and time estimates come from a 2024 description; check current road and trail conditions before driving.

Cachoeira do Rio Preto also combines scenery with an opportunity to swim: the trail passes through canyons and remnants of the Atlantic Forest, and there is a swimming pool at the waterfall. Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina is another point of reference for the region. It covers 152,000 hectares and protects part of the Serra do Sincorá, the northern section of the Serra do Espinhaço. Its area includes, among other ecosystems, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga. The park can be accessed via Ibicoara and five other municipalities; its landscapes provide a broader setting than the individual waterfall trails.

Culture and Local Highlights

Ibicoara’s event history also includes a variety of formats. The first Feira Literária de Ibicoara (FLIBIC) took place from May 21 to 23, 2025. The three-day program included literary discussions and book presentations, as well as cultural performances, workshops, exhibitions, audiovisual offerings, storytelling events, performances and parades.

Several past editions of the Feira de Artesanato Altas Artes were held in the Alto do Cemitério neighborhood of Ibicoara. In addition to handicrafts, the event featured circus, music, dance, theater, other artistic performances and community workshops. The information about FLIBIC refers to its first edition; the information about Altas Artes refers to past editions. If you’d like to plan a visit around an event, check the dates in advance.

Cachaça Cachoeira do Buracão is described as a distinctive culinary tasting experience. Ask locally whether a tasting is available.
