Senhor do Bonfim lies at the southern foot of the Serra do Gado Bravo, an offshoot of the Chapada Diamantina in the Serra do Espinhaço. The municipality is part of the Caatinga biome. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the town of Senhor do Bonfim and other destinations within the municipality: cultural landmarks, historic settlements, and viewpoints are associated with different locations.

Local history and cultural landmarks

At the main entrance to Senhor do Bonfim stands the Monumento da Maior Sanfona do Mundo (Monument to the World's Largest Accordion). It was inaugurated in May 2024 and symbolizes the municipality's cultural tradition. The present-day railway station building in Senhor do Bonfim dates from 1944. The two dates offer different points of reference: the monument is a more recent cultural landmark, while the station building evokes the town's history.

The history of the municipality also goes back a long way. Senhor do Bonfim developed in the 17th century around a rancharia, a resting place for tropeiros (muleteers), which served as a stopover for vaqueiros (cowboys), bandeirantes, and other explorers on their journeys. In the settlement of MissĂŁo do Sahy, also within the municipality, a Franciscan-led mission was founded in 1697. A convent and a church dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Neves were built there.

Music, festivals, and traditions

At São João, Minha Paixão 2025, Samba de Lata performed in the Assis do Acordeon event area. Samba de Lata de Tijuaçu is a cultural expression with roots in African ancestral culture. Traditional performances of Samba de Lata de Tijuaçu were presented at an intermunicipal gathering of Quilombola communities in Tijuaçu in November 2025. The gathering is an annual cultural highlight.

The traditional Festejo de Tijuaçu is celebrated regularly; its November 2025 edition included musical performances and cultural festivities. The traditional Festejos de Missão do Sahy were announced for August 2025, celebrating the community's culture, music, and traditions. The events offer different insights into the municipality's cultural traditions. If you would like to plan your trip around a festival, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Destinations in the municipality's districts

Tijuaçu is a district of Senhor do Bonfim. A travel article from September 2024 highlights the trees known as Barrigudas as a reason to visit. Monte Tabor is in the district of Missão do Sahy. A travel article from September 2024 describes how to reach it by car, motorcycle, or bicycle; the viewpoint offers a view of the natural landscape.

The Trilha dos Trilhos starts at the urban Quilombo Alto da Maravilha and leads toward the settlement of Missão do Sahy. Hikers on the trail can bathe in the waters of Pedra da Baleia. Before using the trail, check local safety conditions along the railway line; before bathing, check conditions on site. The route, the viewpoint, and the trees in Tijuaçu are distinct points of interest for a stay in the municipality, while the monument and station are located in the town of Senhor do Bonfim itself.

If you are planning your trip around a festival, you should also check the dates for the planned edition.
