Discover Bahia through a wide range of themes: religious and musical traditions, historic ensembles, and protected landscapes. When planning your trip, it’s worth deciding first which focus interests you most. Salvador and the Recôncavo offer insights into urban and intangible cultural heritage; Chapada Diamantina and the coast provide different experiences. These places and themes do not form a single, prescribed itinerary, but offer different ways to get to know Bahia.

Cultural Traditions and Cuisine

Since 2005, the Ofício das Baianas de Acarajé has been listed in the Livro dos Saberes as intangible cultural heritage of Brazil. It encompasses the traditional preparation and sale of Baiana foods. Acarajé is made from ground black-eyed peas and filled with vatapá, caruru, and dried shrimp; it is prepared with palm oil. Anyone interested in Bahia’s cuisine will encounter both a time-honored practice and a particular dish here.

Music and movement also show the diversity of cultural expression. The Samba de Roda do Recôncavo Baiano is recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage and encompasses 26 cities. The Roda de Capoeira combines singing and instrumental music with dance, strikes, and playful elements; it also includes symbols and rituals of African, especially Bantu, origin that were reshaped in Brazil. These two traditions can be explored as distinct themes without combining them into a single performance.

Salvador, the Recôncavo, and Historic Ensembles

The Festa do Senhor Bom Jesus do Bonfim is associated with Salvador. It has been held every year without interruption since 1745 and brings together Catholic and Afro-Brazilian religious traditions. Pelourinho also shapes Salvador’s historic character: the neighborhood stands out for its faithful layout based on the 16th-century city plan, its concentration of architectural monuments, and its uniform built environment. The Elevador Lacerda connects Cidade Alta and Cidade Baixa; it also offers one of the best-known views of Baía de Todos-os-Santos.

In the Recôncavo, Cachoeira is considered the most significant expression of Baroque architecture. Historic mansions and churches shape the local architectural heritage. Another, distinct ensemble can be found in Mucugê: protected features include single-story houses, townhouses typical of the second half of the 19th century, and two churches. The Cemitério de Santa Isabel is especially striking. Its mausoleum façades, shaped like miniature churches and chapels, have earned it the name “Byzantine cemetery.” Igatu, meanwhile, is considered a living museum of Brazil’s diamond-mining history.

Landscapes and Protected Areas

The Chapada Diamantina tourist region encompasses the headwaters of the Rio Paraguaçu basin. Its landscape includes numerous rivers rich in water, waterfalls, and crystal-clear natural pools.

In southern Bahia, the Parque Nacional Marinho dos Abrolhos protects a significant part of the largest coral reef and one of the most important humpback whale breeding grounds in the South Atlantic. This protected area offers a different connection with nature from the inland river and waterfall landscapes. Protected areas along the Discovery Coast span Bahia and Espírito Santo: the Discovery Coast Atlantic Forest Reserves comprise eight separate areas with a total of 112,000 hectares of Atlantic rainforest and associated restingas. This total area refers to the protected areas in both states.

Practical Tips for Choosing

Only tour operators authorized by the Parque Nacional Marinho dos Abrolhos may be used for trips to the Abrolhos Archipelago. They provide equipment for freediving and scuba diving, as well as qualified staff to guide visitors. Plan your visit with the authorized operators and confirm current conditions before traveling.

Regular bus services operate in the area of the Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina; there is an airport in the Município Lençóis. As transport connections can change, check the details before departure. The different areas of focus can help you choose a destination in Bahia: historic architecture and urban exploration in Salvador, cultural traditions in the Recôncavo, waterscapes in Chapada Diamantina, or marine nature at Abrolhos. First decide which of these themes matters most to you, then use it to guide your search for hotels in Bahia.
