Choose a stay in Canton 10 based on three distinct interests: cultural heritage, landscapes and outdoor activities. In Livno, museums, historic buildings and cheese-making traditions come together; around Drvar, springs, waterfalls and forests are among the natural highlights; Kupres combines karst formations with summer swimming, hiking and winter sports.
Cultural Heritage and Local Traditions
In Livno, buildings and collections tell different chapters of the town’s history. The Franciscan Museum and Gorica Gallery Livno were founded on 2 October 1995 to systematically collect, preserve, protect and present museum materials from the Canton of Herceg-Bosna. The permanent archaeological exhibition at the Gorica Museum includes objects dating from the Copper Age to the late Middle Ages. The bridge Most na Dumanu was built in the late 17th or early 18th century and is considered a symbol of Livno’s architectural heritage. Of the town’s historic defensive towers, Veis-Kula is the largest and best preserved today.
The Lala-pašina džamija, known as Beglučka džamija, is also an important historical landmark: it was built in 1577/1578 behind Livno’s old town, at Begluk. In 2004, it was placed under state protection and declared a national monument. Another local tradition is Livanjski sir. Its production dates back centuries and is linked to the region’s natural pastures, meadows and diverse vegetation.
In Kupres, Strljanica marks the beginning of the haymaking season. Written records indicate that the tradition dates back 200 years or more. The traditional Kupres Haymaking Days were added to UNESCO’s list of protected intangible cultural heritage on 16 December 2020. This gives the tradition historical and cultural significance, but does not indicate a current event date.
Water, Mountains and Trails
Near Drvar, the Bastašica rises from a spring surrounded by high rock walls; close to its source, it forms several waterfalls, whose water flow depends on rainfall. The area is described as a small eco-zone. A marked trail there includes benches, safety railings and a wooden bridge. As trail infrastructure may change, it is a good idea to check its condition before visiting.
On Klekovača, marked hiking trails lead to Mala Klekovača and Velika Klekovača, and there is also a mountain hut. The Lom rainforest lies near the mountain: it covers 298 hectares and has been legally protected since 1956. Together, these details highlight two distinct natural attractions – trails to named peaks and a protected forest area.
In Tomislavgrad, the mountaineering club Orlova stina maintains more than 170 kilometres of hiking trails. They range from challenging mountain routes to easy walking paths, so they cover different levels of difficulty rather than a single shared grade. The Staza Gospi Sinjskoj trail runs from the Franciscan monastery at Rama Šćit via Tomislavgrad to Sinj and Solin. As a cultural counterpoint to the outdoor attractions, the Duvanjska Basilica is considered Tomislavgrad’s most important urban landmark.
Kupres: Karst, Summer and Winter Sports
Lake KukaviÄŤko is eight kilometres from the centre of Kupres. The glacial lake lies at an altitude of 1,200 metres and reaches a maximum depth of about 13 metres. It is used for swimming in the summer months; check locally in advance to confirm seasonal swimming access.
Japage offers a different karst landscape: five sinkholes lie within an area of about one square kilometre, with a lake in the area. The elevation difference between the highest point and the bottom of the largest sinkhole is 97 metres. Japage is about twelve kilometres west of Kupres and can be reached via a side road off the Kupres–Šipovo main road. Check current road conditions and signage before travelling. Those who prefer to walk can reach the Pločata vrila spring via a hiking trail from Kupreška kuća; the ascent is described as easy and takes up to an hour. Trail conditions may change here too.
Winter sports offer a seasonal alternative to lakes and hiking trails. The Adria Ski resort has four slopes, totalling more than 13 kilometres, served by four ski lifts. On cold, snowy winter days, Ski-Centar na Risovcu is a popular destination for skiers and other visitors seeking winter sports or a winter break. Operating details may change, so check for current information before planning.
Mountain biking is another option: Kupres MTB Trails offers ten all-mountain and enduro routes of varying technical difficulty. A shuttle takes mountain bikers up to the 1,760-metre-high StoĹľer; from there, descents lead down to around 1,200 metres, at the level of the town of Kupres. As shuttle arrangements and route offerings may change, we recommend checking current conditions. For road travel, the M16 main road crosses the mountain pass at Kupres and connects the north with the southwest of Bosnia and Herzegovina; check road conditions before setting off.
These interests offer a clear guide: Livno has historic buildings, collections and a long cheese-making tradition; Drvar and KlekovaÄŤa offer springs, waterfalls, hiking trails and forests; Tomislavgrad combines hiking with an urban landmark; and Kupres pairs karst landscapes and summer swimming with skiing and mountain biking. Choose your base according to the activities you plan to include, and check seasonal access and operating conditions wherever they are important for your trip.
