The Tomislavgrad area has 155 km of marked mountain hiking trails. It also has cultural sites connected to the Delmatae, the Romans and the Middle Ages. When planning a trip, you can focus on different things: exploring marked trails, visiting collections and exhibitions, or including the landscapes around Blidinje Nature Park.
Orientation and Hiking Trails
The Tomislavgrad Information Centre offers audio guides with headphones covering seven tourist attractions in Tomislavgrad. The tours are available in Croatian, English and German. Visitors can also get information brochures and promotional materials there about the municipality’s cultural, historical and tourist attractions. This gives you an overview of different topics before you choose your own focus.
The marked mountain hiking trails in the municipality range from easy walks to challenging mountain trails. The Staza hrvatskih kraljeva begins on Lib Hill, passes over the summit of Vrlokuk and ends at the Studena rest area in Crvenice. The Put hajdučke družine trail takes a different thematic approach: it connects the natural attractions of Vran, including Mijatova pećina, with folk legends and historical connections to the hajduks. The Via Dinarica also passes through the municipality of Tomislavgrad. These descriptions cover different trails and themes; they do not imply that the routes are connected.
Blidinje Nature Park and Its Lake
Blidinje Nature Park is located in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the central Dinaric Alps, and includes the Čvrsnica and Vran mountain ranges. Administratively, it belongs to the municipalities of Posušje, Tomislavgrad, Prozor-Rama and Jablanica, as well as the City of Mostar. Lake Blidinje lies within the nature park between the Vran and Čvrsnica ranges and is the largest mountain lake in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Visitors can canoe on the lake; it also has trailheads for various mountain hiking trails into the surrounding mountains.
There is a specific distinction to bear in mind when travelling to the nature park in winter: the road from Posušje is often closed when there are heavy snowdrifts. The route from Tomislavgrad to Blidinje is then generally the most reliable and usually passable access road. The Šujica offers another way to experience the municipality’s landscape: it is the municipality’s main river, flows through the Šujičko polje and Duvanjsko polje, and is considered a notable example of meander formation and a natural phenomenon. It is popular with fly fishers for its native fish species, including trout; local fishing conditions can vary.
Culture, History and Exhibitions
The monumental Spomen-bazilika sv. Nikole Tavelića, with its Franciscan monastery, is located in the municipality of Tomislavgrad. The Franjevački muzej Tomislavgrad is part of the complex of the Spomen-bazilika sv. Nikole Tavelića and the monastery of sv. Ćirila i Metoda, restored in 1987. Its archaeological and epigraphic collections showcase the heritage of the Delmatae, the Romans and the Middle Ages in the Duvanjsko region. The museum visit therefore focuses on evidence from different historical periods.
The exhibition area at Karmel sv. Ilije displays more than 120 sets of Croatian folk costumes and jewellery; costumes and jewellery from other peoples across Bosnia and Herzegovina are also exhibited. Karmel also organises and leads spiritual exercises, retreats, seminars and various theological gatherings. Another cultural offering is provided by Kulturno-informativni centar Tomislavgrad, with concerts, audiovisual and visual arts projects, theatre performances, book presentations and film screenings.
The long-running cultural and spiritual event “Dani sv. Nikole Tavelića” includes a prayer programme, specialist talks on cultural topics, folklore evenings and traditional customs, as well as music and stage performances. The event venues listed are the courtyard of the Spomen-bazilika and Trg gange i hajdučke družine. Dahna Cave offers another connection to nature and history: it is a significant biospeleological cave area and is known for the discovery of remains of a cave bear that lived there 20,000 years ago. The cave can only be visited with a speleologist.
