The three ancient wells of Kỳ Khang reveal a distinctive side of Kỳ Anh: they connect a tangible story of everyday life with a building style that points to cultural exchange. The wells of Trung Giáp, Đông Hải and Chân Tiên are in the hamlets of Trung Tiến and Trung Hải; they are about a kilometre apart and are relatively well preserved. They were built using Cham techniques. In the past, wells near the coast provided fresh water for fishermen and traders at sea. At the Trung Giáp well, the water remained fresh, not salty, despite its proximity to the coast. The group therefore tells not only of craftsmanship, but also of how an important resource was used on the coast.

A Pagoda Between Mountains and Stream

The Hữu-Lạc Pagoda offers a different landscape. It stands on Bình Xuyên Hill in the village of Hữu Lạc, now in the hamlet of Bắc Tiến in Kỳ Bắc Commune, Kỳ Anh District. Behind it rises the Kỳ Đầu mountain range, also known as the Bằng Sư mountain range. In front are the winding, clear Thăng Làn stream and the Cồn Đá ridge; Mount Voi, also called Ngọc Thạch, lies to the right, and Mount Hương to the left. This precise arrangement of stream, hills and mountains shapes the description of the site.

The pagoda’s history extends beyond its setting: it served as a meeting place for Party members and housed a printing site with stone printing plates used for secret Party documents. This historical role as a meeting and printing place gives the building a different significance from its position among the named natural features. If you are interested in the history of individual places, this combination of landscape and historical use is a notable part of the Kỳ Bắc chapter.

Stone Fortification, Crafts and Music

The old Kỳ Lạc stone fortification adds a trace of military history to the picture. In the 17th century, it was reinforced as a defensive line during the Trịnh–Nguyễn conflict. In 2014, it was recognised as a national architectural and artistic monument; its significance also lies in preserving and interpreting the structure.

In Kỳ Thư, making traditional conical hats is a recognised craft: Hà Tĩnh Province recognised it in 2014. Musical and performance traditions also shape Kỳ Bắc. Trò kiều, tuồng, hát sắc bùa, dân ca and ví đối đáp have been practised there for a long time. In Kỳ Thư, all six hamlets have folk ensembles for ví and giặm; an annual ví giặm exchange programme is also held in the first lunar month. If you would like to include this event in your travel plans, check the specific event date in advance.

Another local tradition is making Xuân Phú fish sauce in Kỳ Xuân, which has been recognised by the province. Currently, two cooperatives and 66 households there produce fish sauce regularly. Together with conical-hat making and musical traditions, this shows a culture that is not only visible in buildings, but also lives on in continuing craft and community practices.

Coastal Destinations and Green Slopes

Kỳ Xuân Beach is in the hamlets of Thắng Lợi, Nguyễn Huệ and Xuân Phú in Kỳ Xuân Commune. Kỳ Phú is also part of the coastal group in Kỳ Anh District. On public holidays, the beaches of Kỳ Xuân, Kỳ Phú and Kỳ Khang are described as places for swimming, sightseeing and sampling seafood. The coastal national highway system connects the district’s beaches and runs continuously from Thạch Khê to Vũng Áng, offering a point of reference for the wider coastal area.

The Kỳ Trung tea garden in Kỳ Văn Commune, formerly called Kỳ Trung, offers a different landscape. Its spacious, open surroundings and extensive green tea slopes define the area. Kỳ Anh thus brings together coastal destinations, historic buildings, wells, crafts and a cultivated green landscape as different discoveries. When looking for a holiday rental, you can first consider which of these themes matters most for your trip.
