The Paxico Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is historically associated with the growth and development of Paxico and Wabaunsee County. Antique shops, an art studio, and the Paxico Blues Fest add further highlights. For your trip planning, local history, art, music, and scenery can each provide a different focus.

Historic Downtown and Art

Paxico’s historic downtown includes antique shops. Mill Creek Antiques is housed in a building dating to 1886. Its features include original fixtures and store counters, an embossed tin ceiling, and wood floors. The shop specializes in restoring old wood- and gas-fired stoves and ranges.

Original oil and watercolor paintings are sold at Brown Rabbit Studio in Paxico. If you’d like to paint yourself, you can inquire about private painting lessons or small-group classes in oil or watercolor. Since class arrangements can change, it’s a good idea to confirm the format and date in advance. In October 2024, Sacred Heart Parish in Paxico celebrated its 150th anniversary with a Mass of Thanksgiving.

Blues Fest in September

The Paxico Blues Fest takes place every year on the third Saturday in September in downtown Paxico. There is live music from morning until evening, and the festival also features regional food. This gives you a specific date to plan your trip around. Dates and programs may change, so check the latest festival information before traveling.

Walking Trails, Fishing, and Wine

Paxico City Park has tree-lined walking trails and two pickleball courts. Walking and pickleball are different ways to enjoy the park. If a particular area is important to your plans, check current conditions, as park amenities may change. Fishing is available on Mill Creek near Paxico.

Prairie Fire Winery offers tasting flights featuring Kansas wines. Visitors can walk through the vineyards and use the walking trails; the views extend 25 to 30 miles. Visitor amenities, reservations, and service details may change. If you’re planning a visit, check current conditions in advance.

One mile west of Paxico, Wyldewood Cellars offers samples of wines, meads, and sangrias made in Kansas at its winery. The two wineries therefore offer different products: Prairie Fire Winery offers tasting flights featuring Kansas wine, while Wyldewood Cellars offers samples of wine, mead, and sangria.

The Flint Hills and Getting There

Paxico lies at the foot of the scenic and historic Flint Hills. The Mill Creek-Skyline Scenic Drive is a good route through the Flint Hills’ gently rolling prairies and agricultural landscapes. This is a regional scenic highlight alongside the attractions in town.

For directions, Paxico is one mile north of Interstate 70 at exits 333/335. This information helps you locate it on a map; it indicates distance, not travel time. When choosing a reason for your trip, you can weigh the Blues Fest’s specific September date against Paxico’s history and art or a drive through the Flint Hills.
