The Native Stone Scenic Byway runs east to west through Eskridge, Alma, and Wabaunsee. But Wabaunsee County also has stories of other routes: the Santa Fe Trail once passed through Wilmington in the county’s southeast, and the region played a role in the Underground Railroad. These routes and stories offer different perspectives on the same area.

Scenic Byways and Landscape

Wabaunsee County’s scenic byways include Flint Hills and Native Stone. The landscape encompasses the physiographic regions of the Flint Hills Uplands, Glaciated Region, and Osage Cuestas. These names describe the broader landscape; the route of the Native Stone Scenic Byway also provides specific guidance along the three places mentioned. Those interested in landscapes and road routes can distinguish regional designations from a particular route.

History at Sites and Along the Water

The historic sites also span different periods and topics. Camp Number Five, which housed German prisoners of war, was located at Lake Wabaunsee from July 1944 to December 1945. The Wabaunsee County Courthouse was completed in 1931 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Beecher Bible and Rifle Church was dedicated in May 1862.

The church is also a place of community life today: a service is held at 9 a.m. on Sundays, and everyone is welcome. Its Homecoming is also still celebrated on the last Sunday in August. If you choose this date as an occasion to visit, check the specific event details in advance, as arrangements may change. For a different perspective on local history, the Wabaunsee County Historical Museum offers convenient visiting hours: it is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. Since opening hours can change, it’s worth checking before your visit.

Art, Prairie, and Local Discoveries

The Volland Foundation hosts art exhibitions and community programs in its gallery. Outdoor performances also take place at “the Ruin.” The Volland History, Nature, and Sculpture Trail and the M.T. Liggett Sculpture Park are open daily from sunrise to sunset. Those interested in exploring different artistic offerings will find both exhibitions and programs, as well as a sculpture park, here.

Located along the Native Stone Scenic Byway, Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park is in the endangered Tallgrass Prairie of the Kansas Flint Hills. The visitor experience includes the Tallgrass Prairie, the culture of the Flint Hills, and the history of the nation’s ongoing struggle for freedom. Museums and exhibits at Ag Heritage Park focus on historic agricultural life. Visits are available by appointment.

Lakes, Activities, and Camping

At Echo Cliff Park, Mission Creek flows along the base of 50-foot-high cliffs. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Camping after dark is permitted if campers notify the Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office. The daytime opening hours and the special condition for overnight camping are two separate points to consider when planning.

At Lake Wabaunsee, you can fish, go boating, water-ski, and sail, as well as canoe, kayak, and birdwatch. RV sites are available, and tent camping is also permitted. Amenities include restrooms, water, and picnic areas. At Alma City Lake, you can fish, kayak, canoe, and enjoy family picnics. Comparing the two lakes helps you sort your interests: Lake Wabaunsee offers additional water sports, birdwatching, and camping options, while the activities mentioned and picnics are the main draws at Alma City Lake.
