Tunceli brings together a diverse museum, cultural sites at river confluences and landscapes in the surrounding area. The city center, the Pülümür Valley and Munzur Vadisi offer different perspectives on the region. If you are looking for accommodation, first consider whether you want to focus mainly on culture and places in the center, or also include nature destinations elsewhere in the wider destination in your plans.

Museum and Architectural History

Tunceli Müzesi is housed in a listed, three-story former barracks building. German architects designed it for military use in 1937. From 1937 to 1949, the building served as a military barracks, and then as accommodation for civil servants until 2015. It was restored and converted into a museum between 2015 and 2020, also creating a venue for social and cultural activities.

The museum’s departments focus on archaeology, ethnography, coins, traditional agriculture, flora and fauna, beliefs, stone artifacts and recent history. A total of 1,838 objects are registered in the archaeological, ethnographic and numismatic collections. The awards also provide context for the museum’s history: in 2022, the museum reached the final of the European Museum Forum’s “European Museum of the Year” competition. In 2023, it was named one of Europe’s three best museums at the European Museum Academy Luigi Micheletti Awards.

Rivers and Cultural Sites in the Center

The Pülümür Çayı rises on the slopes of the Avcı Mountains. Fed by snowmelt and numerous streams, the river carries abundant water and flows into the Munzur Suyu in the center of Tunceli. Gole Çeto Ziyareti is located at the confluence, also in the city center. The Cem Evi is situated above it. A visit can offer insights into the beliefs, rituals and customs of people in the region.

Dar Sokak also offers a glimpse of local life: the street in central Tunceli has shops selling regional food products. Cultural sites at the confluence and shopping in the stores offer different ways to shape your stay in the city.

Pülümür Valley and Nature Destinations

The Pülümür Valley begins about 20 kilometers to the north, along the road from Tunceli to Pülümür, and extends as far as Pülümür. Dense forests, waterfalls, rocky slopes and gorges characterize the landscape. The area has potential for outdoor sports such as hiking, climbing and paragliding. The vegetation and natural surroundings also offer potential for picnics and camping. For specific activities on site, check what is available locally.

Örenönü Tabiat Parkı is on the Pülümür road, three kilometers from Tunceli. It is considered a place to stop and rest in natural surroundings, with food and drink options. Check the specific facilities available on site before visiting.

A Wider View of the Tunceli Destination

At the broader destination level, Munzur Vadisi National Park extends along the valley to the Munzur Mountains. Its starting point is eight kilometers from Tunceli city center. The national park’s flora includes 1,518 different plants, including 227 species endemic to Türkiye. This adds a broader landscape perspective to the riverside sites close to the city.

Getting There and Planning

Tunceli can be reached by road; the nearest airport is in Elazığ. The drive from Tunceli into the Munzur Valley follows the Munzur Suyu through Munzur Vadisi National Park. Along the way, you can see waterfalls and wildflowers; mountain goats, squirrels and foxes may also be spotted. Such sightings are possible but not guaranteed.
