Munzur Vadisi National Park begins eight kilometers from Tunceli city center and lies between Tunceli and Ovacık. It stretches along the valley as far as the Munzur Mountains.

Munzur Valley: Mountains, Gorges, and Plant Life

Steep slopes shape the landscape along the narrow, deep sections of the Munzur Suyu Valley. Rock formations, gorges, and waterfalls in some places add to the scenery of the steep valley slopes. In 1963, a 20-hectare part of Munzur Gözeleri was designated as a forest recreation area.

The national park’s flora includes 1,518 different plant species, including 227 species endemic to Türkiye. Endemic to Türkiye means these species occur naturally only there.

Rivers and a Range of Activities

The Peri Suyu forms part of Tunceli’s eastern border and flows southwest into the Keban Reservoir. The upper reaches of the Munzur Suyu are particularly suitable as a habitat for red-spotted trout. The trout are found throughout a waterway area about 80 kilometers long.

An approximately 20-kilometer stretch of the Munzur Suyu between Aşağı Torunoba, Sarıtaş, and Halbori Gözeleri has potential for rafting. This approximately 20-kilometer stretch of the Munzur Suyu with rafting potential is considerably shorter than the roughly 80-kilometer waterway area where red-spotted trout are found.

The Museum and Tunceli’s Architectural History

The Tunceli Museum has departments and exhibition areas dedicated to archaeology, ethnography, and coins, as well as traditional agriculture, flora, and fauna. Its themes also include religion, stone artifacts, and recent history. Unlike the national park, whose focus is on the landscape, the museum brings together cultural-historical and natural-history themes, offering you a different way to explore the area.

The Tunceli Museum building was constructed between 1935 and 1937 as a military barracks and used as such until 1949. The building’s former use as a barracks gives it a historical dimension of its own, alongside the exhibits on recent history.

Dereova and the Surrounding Area

Dereova Waterfall is located near the destination. Its natural surroundings have potential for picnics and day trips with walks in nature. At the same time, tourism opportunities are limited because there are few other tourist and recreational facilities nearby. Keep this limitation in mind when considering Dereova as part of your plans: its landscape potential does not automatically mean there is a wide range of activities and facilities.

The location details help put these places into context: the park entrance is eight kilometers from the city center, while the museum is a separate destination in Tunceli.
