Rock Formations and the Valley’s History
Uçhisar Castle consists of two immense, neighboring fairy chimneys that taper to a point. They are known as Ağa’nın Kalesi and Çavuş’un Kalesi. If you arrive by car, the castle is on the road between Ürgüp and Göreme.
Güvercinlik Valley begins in Uçhisar, extends to Göreme, and stretches for four kilometers. It takes its name from the dovecotes carved into the rock. The valley has a waterfall that cascades down from a height of 15 meters.
Cevizlibağ lies on the northern edge of the settlement of Uçhisar. From there, you can enjoy a panorama of the castle and the fairy chimneys surrounding it. Vasıl Deresi is a valley in the Uçhisar area, known for its natural beauty and historic rock formations. The Beyaz and Meskendir valleys near Uçhisar were listed in 2021 in an overview of nature-walking areas in Nevşehir. Cevizli Valley near Uçhisar was also listed in a 2021 overview as an area for observing wildlife. In the Wider Destination of Nevşehir
In the wider destination of Nevşehir, the Karanlık Kilise is located in the Göreme Valley in Cappadocia, within a monastic complex that is part of the Göreme Open-Air Museum. The church dates to the late 11th or early 12th century. Its frescoes depict scenes from the life of Jesus and images of saints. A small window in the narthex let in very little light, helping the frescoes retain particularly vivid colors. The Göreme Open-Air Museum has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a natural and cultural heritage site since December 6, 1985.
Another cultural site in the Nevşehir destination is the Damat İbrahim Paşa Complex. Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Paşa had it built in 1726–1727. The complex includes a mosque, a medrese, a caravanserai, a primary school, an imaret, a bathhouse, and two fountains. These regional examples offer a different perspective on architecture and history from Uçhisar’s rock landscapes and valleys.
