A small window in the narthex let very little light into the Karanlık Kilise. This limited lighting is one reason why the colors of its frescoes have been particularly vividly preserved. The church is dated to the late 11th or early 12th century. Nevşehir’s Merkez İlçe lies in the heart of the Cappadocia region; here, a spatial detail and the effect of the paintings are particularly closely connected.
Frescoes, Architecture and Cultural Heritage
The Dark Church, also known as Karanlık Kilise, is located in the Göreme Valley in Cappadocia and is part of a monastery complex belonging to the Göreme Open-Air Museum. Its frescoes depict scenes from the life of Jesus as well as representations of saints. The Göreme Open-Air Museum has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a natural and cultural heritage site since December 6, 1985. The church’s subject matter and the museum’s broader classification can thus be viewed as two different levels of cultural heritage.
The İbrahim Paşa Mosque offers a distinctive architectural perspective. Its prayer hall is square and crowned by a large dome, with pendentives leading up to it. The transition from the square space to the vaulted structure forms a distinctive design concept: the pendentives mediate between the two. While the Karanlık Kilise is defined by its frescoes and the way light enters, here the geometry of the prayer hall takes center stage.
The Damat İbrahim Paşa Complex represents a different scale of historic architecture. It was built in 1726–1727 by Nevşehirli Damat İbrahim Paşa and comprises a mosque, a madrasa, a caravanserai, an elementary school, an imaret, a bathhouse and two fountains. The construction period gives the complex a clear historical reference point. At the same time, the variety of its components draws attention to an ensemble that cannot be reduced to a single building type.
Rock Landscapes and Underground Architecture
Güvercinlik Valley takes its name from the pigeon houses carved into the rocks. It stretches for four kilometers from Uçhisar to Göreme. Its name and length offer different points of reference for the landscape: the pigeon houses point to how the rocks were shaped, while the distance places the valley between two named locations.
Uçhisar Castle consists of two pointed fairy chimneys directly adjoining one another. It is located on the road between Ürgüp and Göreme. In this way, architectural form and geographical orientation come together: the fairy chimneys describe the castle’s shape, while its location on the road indicates its relationship to two named places.
Underground, the city of Kaymaklı offers a different perspective. The underground city comprises interconnected rooms, storage areas, kitchens, ventilation shafts, wells, a church and large sliding doors for security. The interconnected rooms make the layout’s internal relationships a subject in their own right; the sliding doors add architectural features explicitly intended for security.
