Feuerthalen can be explored through three specific themes: the circular hike “Three Towers Tour on the Cholfirst”, the Rheinwiese leisure area on the banks of the Rhine, and historical traces from the medieval place name to the Fürstengut municipal building. This allows you to consider, before choosing a holiday apartment, whether activity, riverside scenery or architectural and local history should shape your stay.
Between the Rhine and the Cholfirst
Feuerthalen is situated on the Rhine in a landscape shaped by the river, north of the heavily forested Cholfirst and directly opposite the city of Schaffhausen. A road bridge and a railway bridge connect Feuerthalen with Schaffhausen. The river landscape, wooded ridge and opposite city thus provide different geographical reference points for the town.
Hiking from Feuerthalen railway station
The circular hike “Three Towers Tour on the Cholfirst” starts at Feuerthalen railway station and connects three observation towers. As a circular hike, it brings several observation towers together on one route; the station is its named starting point. Check the route conditions before setting out. If hiking is the deciding factor in choosing a destination, this tour is a specific highlight alongside the Rheinwiese by the river.
The Rheinwiese by the river
The Rheinwiese leisure area is a park directly on the banks of the Rhine and includes a sunbathing and play meadow for swimming fun. The site can be reached in a ten-minute walk from the “Langwiesen” or “Feuerthalen” stops. Local transport arrangements can change, so it is worth checking the current connection before your visit. The facility’s operating details can also change. Check them before your visit.
Several construction phases at the FĂĽrstengut municipal building
The construction history of the FĂĽrstengut municipal building spans two centuries. The original building was built in the 16th century by a Schaffhausen family; a core structure also dates from this period. Eastern and western extensions complement the building, with their substructures dated to the 17th century. This distinguishes the older core from the later-dated parts, rather than reducing the building to a single construction date. The municipal building has spacious grounds with a fountain.
Ford, chapel and market rights
Feuerthalen was first documented in 1318 under the name “Furtal an dem Rine”. The place name derives from a ford that existed there in the Middle Ages. Feuerthalen has held market rights since 1528. Another historical date is the first mention, in 1390, of the still-existing St. Leonhard Chapel.
Hilari in the week of 13 January
Hilari has been celebrated for more than 600 years in Feuerthalen, Langwiesen, Flurlingen and Uhwiesen, each year in the week of 13 January. During the Hilari festival weekend, garages are turned into bars. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates for that week.
