At the lakeside, you can combine a visit to Oberägeri with a specific water activity: the Ägerisee Sailing School is based there and offers taster sailing courses. At the same time, the guided village tour “Valley of Homes. A landscape of institutions in Oberägeri” takes a very different approach, exploring the fascinating and, at times, shocking history of the sanatoriums, children’s homes and poorhouses. There is also the history of Morgarten and trails through the Ägerital valley. If you are considering Oberägeri as a place to stay, these different topics can help you plan your visit.

Lakeside: sailing and practical information

The lakeside can be reached from Oberägeri station by bus routes 1, 9, 10 or 34, followed by a walk of less than 15 minutes. The Ägerisee Sailing School is located there and offers taster sailing courses. As course availability and conditions may change, it is advisable to check them in advance.

The lakeside also has a playground with a sand area, play ship and climbing wall, as well as picnic facilities. Temporary construction work is limiting its use; take this into account when planning and check the situation before your visit.

Morgarten and the history of Oberägeri

Morgarten, in the municipality of Oberägeri, is regarded as the site of the Confederates’ first battle for freedom. It is associated with 15 November 1315 and the crushing defeat of a Habsburg army. The Morgarten experience also includes a modern visitor centre, which can be opened independently using an SMS code. This combines the historic site with a practical visitor offering.

The guided village tour “Valley of Homes. A landscape of institutions in Oberägeri” offers a different perspective on local history, focusing on the sanatoriums, children’s homes and poorhouses. The development of local institutions is also part of the area’s history. Separate municipal communities, citizen communities and Catholic parishes were established in the Ägerital valley; the two corporations remained independent. In Oberägeri, the separate municipal and citizen communities, as well as the important role of the local corporation, are part of the municipality’s history. The citizen community traces its origins to the French Revolution of 1798.

Hikes and scenery

The Chriesi hike starts and ends at the Oberägeri, Grund bus stop. It passes through the gentle hills of the Ägerital valley, with meadows, forests and traditional farmhouses. Cherries have a long tradition in the region and continue to shape the landscape and local culture. Another scenic spot is Gottschalkenberg, at 1,186 metres above sea level, which offers views of the Lake Zurich region and the panorama of the Glarus Alps.

Sections of the Panorama Trail can also be an appealing choice for a picnic: they are easy to reach by bus or boat and feature well-equipped fire pits at regular intervals. One fire pit is located on Morgartenberg near Oberägeri, in an impressive natural setting, with views of Chaiserstock. It is designated as an official Swiss family fire pit.

The Chriesi hike has a clearly specified start and finish; Gottschalkenberg stands out for its elevation and distant views.
