Morgarten combines a distinctive culture of remembrance with several clearly differentiated routes by Lake Ägeri. The village is known as the site of the first battle for Swiss independence, fought against a Habsburg army on 15 November 1315. The Morgarten Monument offers views across Lake Ägeri and the Ägeri Valley. In terms of its location, design, size and form, it has no direct equivalent among Switzerland’s other memorial sites. Its historical significance and its landscape setting together shape the character of this destination.

Hiking trails and cycling route

A hike by Lake Ägeri has a clearly defined duration and distance: the route is 8.5 kilometres long and takes two hours. It runs from Unterägeri via Morgarten, Naas and Bergmatt, then back to Unterägeri. To judge which hike fits into your day, you can compare this measured route with the Ägerital Panorama Trail, whose stages can be chosen individually.

One section of the Panorama Trail leads from Raten to Morgarten. The trail passes through shaded woodland and across open pastures before reaching the Morgarten Monument. Another route is the Morgarten Trail, which runs between the church in Sattel and the Morgarten Monument by Lake Ägeri. The hiking options therefore differ both in their stated starting and ending points and in the character of the routes, as well as in the option to choose stages individually.

For cycling, the Lake Ägeri–Morgarten family cycling route offers another type of route. It starts in Unterägeri, follows the shore of Lake Ägeri to Morgarten and is almost flat. The paths are easy to ride, and there are picnic areas along the route. Its shoreline route, almost flat profile and picnic spots set it apart from the hiking trails.

Local history

The modern exhibition at the Morgarten Information Centre is open from April to mid-November. This seasonal opening period is a useful guide when planning a visit. In the hamlet of Schornen, the Information Centre presents the history of the battle in a four-language multimedia show. A historical trail with seven animated stations leads from the Morgarten Monument via the Information Centre to the parish church in Sattel. The exhibition, multimedia presentation and trail offer different ways to explore the history of the area.

The medieval Schwyz house stands on the historical grounds near Morgarten. Its core building dates from 1176. The Morgarten shooting competition, first held in 1912, is another historical reference. The dates mark different chapters: 1176 is the date of the house’s core building, 1315 the battle with which Morgarten is associated, and 1912 the beginning of the historic Morgarten shooting competition. The sites and attractions around Morgarten thus trace a path from medieval architectural history, through the history of the battle, to a later historical event.
