In the Brè-Aldesago neighbourhood, mountain scenery, scenic trails and a rich village history come together. The “Nature, art and fun trail” leads to a viewpoint above Aldesago, where views open up across the Gulf of Lugano. A stone washhouse and the Chiesa di Aldesago also tell the story of the area’s past.
Location and getting around
The Brè-Aldesago neighbourhood lies on the eastern slope of Monte Brè, in a predominantly mountainous and wooded area. From there, you can enjoy views of Lake Lugano and the city. A panoramic road connects Brè and Aldesago and passes through a landscape of great natural value.
For getting around by public transport, TPL route 12 is relevant: it serves the Aldesago Paese stop and connects Brè Paese, Ruvigliana and Lugano Centro. Check the latest timetable details before travelling. The Brè-Aldesago neighbourhood can also be reached via the cantonal road from Cassarate and Ruvigliana.
Trails on Monte Brè
The “Nature, art and fun trail” starts at the top station of the Monte Brè funicular and follows a path towards Aldesago to a viewpoint above the village. The circular route is listed as taking about one hour and 20 minutes; the ascent covers 141 metres of elevation gain and the descent 137 metres. The route is considered easy, although difficulty and duration may vary depending on conditions. The viewpoint offers panoramic views of the Gulf of Lugano.
Another trail description takes the Woodland Trail Brè–Cureggia along the eastern side of Monte Brè to a panoramic parking area above Aldesago. The two descriptions give different points of reference: the “Nature, art and fun trail” focuses on the circular route and viewpoint, while the Woodland Trail follows the eastern side of Monte Brè and ends above the village.
Cycling
The Brè Bike route passes through the forests of Monte Brè and Monte Boglia. It includes a singletrack trail to the Alpe Bolla mountain hut at the foot of Monte Boglia. For the return ride to Lugano, the route recommends a gravel path from Brè towards Aldesago that is marked as a hiking trail. As trail conditions may vary, it is a good idea to check them locally.
Village history and art
Aldesago developed along the transhumance route used by the inhabitants of Brè sopra Lugano. At the entrance to the village of Brè-Aldesago stands an ancient stone washhouse, regarded as a surviving symbol of the area’s past. Traces such as these give the village its own historical character, alongside the neighbourhood’s trails and views.
The history of the Chiesa di Aldesago dates back to 1636. Its original location was in the village centre; the building there later had to make way for road construction. The new church was inaugurated 80 days after its foundation stone was laid and consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary on 30 May 1943. Behind its altar, a fresco by Luigi Taddei depicts the Assumption of Mary. The area’s history thus brings together an earlier church site, the construction of a new church and a specifically named work of art.
