At the Dogana Sud–Fornasette border crossing, individual tourist traffic is possible 24 hours a day, Monday to Sunday; at the same time, the crossing is unattended. These two details refer to different things: one concerns staffing, the other traffic hours. Operating conditions may change; check them before departure. The address is Piazza Dogana 2, 6988 Ponte Tresa.

Planning a cycling trip

If the PostBus route 429 is part of your journey, bicycles can be carried, but space is limited. The timetable period runs from 14 December 2025 to 12 December 2026. Check bicycle capacity before travelling if you plan to bring your bike.

The planned Blu Tresa project has a longer-term horizon. It aims to enable sustainable travel to cultural and tourist destinations along the cross-border corridor. The plan is to connect Luino in Italy to the Fornasette border crossing and then to the cycle network of the Canton of Ticino; the project is part of the Interreg Italy–Switzerland 2021–2027 programme. For specific journeys, the distinction matters: Blu Tresa is a project objective, not a completed cycle route.

Le Fornaci sports field

Le Fornaci sports field in Fornasette is a floodlit natural-grass pitch for football and small-sided football. Its minimum dimensions are 57.6 Ă— 90 metres; these indicate a lower limit, not the exact size of the pitch. This provides a way to describe the facility by its surface, lighting, size and type of use. If sport is one of your interests, it is a tangible local feature alongside the cultural themes of your stay.

Chapel and local history

A chapel still stands on Via Mairocoli. Around 1920–1930, Monteggio (Fornasette) had a restaurant and a grocery shop. The chapel and the former shops represent different layers of time: a building that remains to this day on the one hand, and evidence of how people were supplied at the time on the other. A local exhibition also displays several bricks bearing the imprint “Fornasette”. These objects with a direct connection to the area add to the architectural and everyday traces. The information about the restaurant and grocery shop and about the patronal festival relates to widely separated periods: the shops were in Fornasette around 1920–1930, while the festival took place in 2018.

San Francesco alle Fornasette patronal festival

The 2018 patronal festival included a Mass, an “incanto” and lunch under pavilions in the church forecourt. Pets were blessed at the same festival. The service, communal meal and animal blessing brought religious and community elements together on this occasion. These details refer to the 2018 festival. If a festival date is important for your trip, check current local dates in advance.
