Langrickenbach lies on the eastern foothills of the Seerücken ridge, not far from Lake Constance. A typical rural municipality in Thurgau, it is considered a starting point for hikes through the traditional Thurgau countryside; agriculture continues to play an important role throughout the municipality. The village also has a long history: Langrickenbach was first mentioned in a document in 889 as “Rihchinbahc”. The settlement of Lenzwil in the village district of Dünnershaus has been documented in writing since 838.
Exploring on foot and by bike
The Langrickenbach Panorama Trail offers views of Lake Constance and the German shore. It also passes through Herrenhof’s protected village centre, allowing you to experience both the landscape and the historic village centre on the same route. Above the village district of Zuben, a barbecue area by the old reservoir offers views of the lake and a place to stop and relax. If you plan a break, you’ll find a convenient spot there with a view of the lake.
There is also a named route for cycling: the SeerĂĽcken regional cycle route runs through Langrickenbach. Hikes and bike rides also take you past several listed half-timbered houses. This gives you different ways to explore the landscape: the Panorama Trail combines lake views with the village centre, while the cycle route connects the village to a regional cycling link. Which option suits you depends on whether you prefer to explore on foot or by bike.
Church, village centre and historic buildings
The Protestant church in Langrickenbach was first mentioned between 900 and 910. Its present-day form dates from 1897 to 1899; it was renovated inside and out in 1997. The church is under legally binding protection and is classified as “particularly valuable” in the Thurgau inventory of buildings of note. These dates provide a historical context for a visit: the first mention dates back a long way, while the present-day appearance is from the late 19th century.
The Schlössli Herrenhof is another notable stop in Herrenhof’s protected village centre. It is privately owned and can be viewed from the outside. The former Rössli inn is a long, multi-purpose half-timbered building. Its rear cross-wing is also timber-framed and stands on turned oak columns from the 18th century. The architecture thus combines half-timbering, an additional cross-wing and historic columns, without requiring visitors to go inside.
Selsmüli in Schönenbaumgarten was a mill that was converted into a residence and workshop. Its overall appearance dates from the 18th and 19th centuries; in the cantonal inventory, it is classified as “noteworthy”. Together with the listed half-timbered houses and the church, this architectural heritage offers several points of interest for anyone who likes to notice the design and former use of buildings while out for a stroll.
Nature, getting here and local produce
MĂĽlibach is an open stream and a local recreation area. The renaturalised MĂĽlibach/Stichbach habitat provides a suitable home for fish, crayfish, beetles, birds and amphibians. This adds a nature theme to the lake views and architecture; the animal groups listed describe the habitat and do not imply that you will see them on every visit.
Langrickenbach is served by the Amriswil–Münsterlingen–Kreuzlingen PostBus route, making it accessible by public transport. Check the timetable for your travel date when planning your journey. The Alte St. Galler Strasse is also part of the village’s history: Langrickenbach lies on this once-important route, which connected the episcopal city of Konstanz with the Abbey of St. Gallen from the Middle Ages until the 19th century.
The farm shop at stadifarm in DĂĽnnershaus sells home-grown apricots as well as homemade jams, schnapps and liqueur made from its own fruit. The product range and seasonal availability may change; check what is currently on offer before visiting. Local agriculture can also be discovered through its produce, while the Panorama Trail, village centre and historic buildings offer other highlights during your stay.
