A mineral bath, a museum in the village center and trails with a variety of focuses give Andeer a diverse character. The municipality is located in the Viamala region of the canton of GraubĂĽnden and is considered the largest municipality in Schams. Mineralbad Andeer has indoor and outdoor pools with bubble loungers, a neck shower and a whirlpool. The sauna area includes a bio sauna, Finnish sauna and steam bath. CasaStorica is located in the village center. It is a museum and also a stage in a former residential house. Its themes range from the history of the valleys along the Hinterrhein to the historic ViaSpluga transit route. Exhibits include documents relating to muleteers, postcards, writings, antique objects and regional curiosities from the Viamala region. Public village tours and village theater performances take place regularly in Andeer; check the dates before your trip.
Trails for Different Interests
The “Zwergenwald” children’s adventure trail is about 1.5 kilometers long and suitable for children aged four to eight. Its 13 forest stations combine hidden animals with opportunities to make music, balance and talk on the phone. The forest nature trail has a different focus: between Andeer and Clugin, you can learn about 11 conifer species, 26 deciduous tree species and 20 shrubs; there are also bird nesting aids along the trail. The trail starts in Andeer at the covered wooden bridge.
For a cycling route option, the Schamser Tal loop runs through Val Schons: from Zillis or Andeer via Donat, Clugin, Pignia and Reischen. At the southern exit from Andeer, it crosses the Hinterrhein. The two forest trails and the loop ride differ in theme and mode of transport; they do not need to be combined into a single outing.
Gorge and Local History
The rock gallery in Rofflaschlucht leads to the waterfall and allows you to pass beneath the thundering Rhine. At the entrance is a historic inn with a restaurant and a small museum about the gorge’s formation. If traveling by PostBus, use the “Andeer, Rofflaschlucht” stop; timetables may change.
Andeer’s transport history also helps put the village in context. After the construction of the road between 1818 and 1823, the municipality experienced an economic boom driven by traffic. The opening of the Gotthard Railway in 1882 later coincided with the loss of transit traffic. The historic ViaSpluga and the themes of CasaStorica give this transit history a distinct cultural connection.
Getting There and Regional Products
Andeer is accessible by PostBus. By car, the A13 leads from the north via exit 24-Zillis towards Zillis/Andeer and from the south via exit 25-Andeer. Check current timetables or road conditions before setting off.
The Andeer dairy is part of local food production: it processes 400,000 liters of silage-free organic milk. Five farming families and five people working in processing produce milk, butter, yogurt, quark and cheese there.
