Wergenstein is situated at 1,485 m above sea level in the upper Schamserberg area. Mountain trails lead through pastures and along narrow paths, with opportunities to discover local wildlife and the village’s distinctive cultural sites. Pastures, forests and mountain streams shape the landscape in the municipality of Muntogna da Schons. Its alpine climate, with cold winters and mild summers, is considered ideal for hiking, biking and winter sports.
Mountain trails, Maiensässe and wildlife watching
The first stage of the Via Capricorn starts in Wergenstein, at the Center da Capricorns. It leads through the Wergenstein pastures to the Maiensäss of Dumagns, where typical small wooden huts stand alongside their larger barns. The Val da Larisch, along the same stage, is considered a habitat for black grouse. Ibex, chamois, ptarmigan and mountain hares may be spotted in the area around the Carnusa Pass, although sightings are not guaranteed.
Another hike also starts in Wergenstein: the summer route “Panoramic Schamserberg in Beverin Nature Park” follows narrow paths and alpine tracks high above the Val Schons. The mountain hike “To Piz Beverin” runs from Wergenstein, Tguma, to Wergenstein, Dumagns. These descriptions provide different points of reference for choosing a route: one follows narrow paths and alpine tracks above the valley, while the other specifies the endpoints of a mountain hike. No hiking times or difficulty ratings are provided.
The Senda da Panorama Val Schons leads through the varied cultural landscape of the Schamserberg. Species-rich meadows and pastures shape this landscape; constructed boardwalks cross sensitive moorland, allowing visitors to access these ecologically valuable areas with minimal impact.
Getting around by bike or in winter
For a bike ride, the Alp-Anarosa bike tour can start in Wergenstein. It follows roads that are easy to ride uphill into the Alp Anarosa/Curtginatsch area. Road conditions and seasonal access may vary. Check the conditions before planning your tour.
In winter, the Wergenstein–Casti–Donat sledging run offers a different route: it is 3.5 km long and descends 450 metres from Wergenstein via Casti to Donat. Transport up the mountain is by PostBus or private car. As transport rules and road conditions may change and winter conditions vary, it is advisable to check the latest information before setting off.
Crystals, the church and local history
The guided “Crystal Hunting on Piz Beverin” excursion is a seasonal bookable experience in Wergenstein. It begins with an introduction at Restaurant Capricorn. In the field, participants search for rock crystals and associated minerals such as calcite and pyrite under expert guidance, using a hammer and chisel on the rock or digging in the ground. The activity also includes a visit to a mineral exhibition in the workshop. Check dates and current availability before planning your visit.
The Reformed Church of Wergenstein is notable for its tower, which faces down the valley and has a tent-shaped roof and a single-storey belfry. The choir features a ribbed vault, a raised pulpit, an organ and a central baptismal font. The church is open during the day and free to enter; check access before your visit.
The Capricorn exhibition uses an interactive relief to present Beverin Nature Park and the world of the ibex in 3D and through multimedia. Its themes include the ibex’s extinction, reintroduction and present-day distribution. The village’s history also stretches back a long way: Wergenstein was first mentioned in 1219 as “Vergasteno.” A necropolis dating from the 6th and 7th centuries was excavated in the area. The village converted to the Reformation before 1538; St. Calixt Chapel is mentioned in 1538.
