Agriculture and winegrowing continue to shape Presinge today. Fields, forests and historic sites offer different ways to spend your time: explore the rural surroundings along walking paths or learn about the history of the hamlet of Cara and the Church of Saint-Félix. When choosing accommodation in Presinge, you can decide whether nature trails or cultural heritage matter most to you.
Fields, forests and walking trails
Presinge has numerous cultivated fields and forests, as well as large herds of cattle and wild animals. The hamlet of L’Avenir is surrounded by trees and meadows. Agriculture and winegrowing are therefore not just historical subjects; they continue to shape the municipality.
Explore the Les Faverges nature reserve along the various paths that border it. A hiking route connects Gy and Presinge through forests and leads towards the Prés de Villette nature reserve. Almost three-quarters of this hike runs through forest. The paths bordering Les Faverges and the forest route between Gy and Presinge offer different nature-focused experiences. Trail conditions can change, so check the current conditions before setting out.
For further orientation, the “Seymaz régions” hiking map covers seven municipalities: Choulex, Gy, Jussy, Meinier, Presinge, Puplinge and Vandoeuvres. The map provides an overview of hiking in these seven municipalities.
Cara and the history of Saint-Félix
The hamlet of Cara already existed in Celtic times and is now part of the municipality of Presinge. It formed a promontory along the route from Annemasse to Thonon. The church also has a long history: since 1420, the Church of Presinge has been under the authority of the cathedral chapter of Geneva; the first mention of the Saint-Félix sanctuary dates back to 1304.
Together with the rectory, the Church of Saint-Félix stands on an esplanade slightly above the Grand-Rue and is a defining feature of the area. Its choir is one of the few of its kind in the canton to have retained its original appearance. Along with its setting, the church offers a specific architectural detail to look out for as you explore the area’s history.
Another distinctive feature is the Mosaïque à Petit-Cara. It is currently located beneath the southeast gallery of the manor house and is considered the only mosaic in the Canton of Geneva to be as well preserved, apart from the mosaic discovered beneath Geneva Cathedral. The church, the sanctuary and the Mosaïque à Petit-Cara represent different chapters in the area’s history.
