The Temple de Cartigny, the medieval Church of Saint-Georges and the Ancien château Duval represent distinct chapters in the history of architecture. Alongside this architecture, the Feuillu is a tradition celebrated on a recurring date in May. For planning your trip, there is a clear choice of themes: you can focus on church architecture and historic alterations, or include local traditions and produce. The village also features cobbled streets and traditional houses with tiled roofs.

Churches and building phases

The Temple de Cartigny is characteristic of 18th-century Protestant religious buildings. Inside, the pews are arranged around a central pulpit in the Louis XV style. This brings together the broad stylistic classification and a specific feature of the interior design.

A different building phase is represented by the medieval Church of Saint-Georges: it was rebuilt and enlarged in 1772, with parts of the old walls reused. This connection gives its architectural history several layers. Its medieval origins are as much a part of the story as the rebuilding, extension and reused sections of wall.

Ancien château Duval

The Ancien château Duval is classified as protected cultural heritage under designation MS-c162, dated 29 November 1960. An earlier phase was its transformation between 1801 and 1805, when the contractor Charles-Louis Lequin and Nicolas Soret redesigned the building in the neoclassical style. Two low wings with flat roofs and balustrades were added. The façades also gained features including balconies on columns, pilasters, an Empire-style cornice and acroteria. This sequence clearly distinguishes the building alterations at the start of the 19th century from its 1960 heritage classification. Compared with Saint-Georges, the focus here is on the neoclassical redesign and its specifically named additions.

The Feuillu in May

In Cartigny, the Feuillu is celebrated on the first Sunday in May. The celebration is preceded by the cleaning of the fountains; as an old custom, the Feuillu is associated with the pagan cult of water. Cleaning the fountains provides a preliminary step in the tradition and is part of the sequence of the custom. The specific calendar date changes from year to year. So if you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the date for the relevant year.

Goat cheese and direct sales

La chèvrerie du champ courbe is a small family-run farm in Cartigny, specialising in goat farming and goat cheese production. Its products are sold directly at the farm, where a self-service area is available around the clock every day. If you plan to include farm-gate sales as a culinary part of your stay, check the current sales information before visiting, as the sales arrangements may change. The farm complements the cultural themes with a tangible link to agricultural production and direct sales.
