Ölsremma offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the architectural history of Ölsremma kyrka, milling at Åremma kvarn, traditional food storage and the landscape along the Västerån. The walk near Åremma also follows a specific route: upstream along the water, with wide views over Västergötland and Småland on the return journey. In winter, there is also Bohestramosse, an extension of the Komosse Nature Reserve that is suitable for cross-country skiing away from prepared trails. The options therefore range from cultural history to a seasonal outdoor activity. When planning your trip, you can start by choosing a focus: are you more interested in architecture and craftsmanship, traditional everyday practices, or a walk or winter cross-country skiing?

Church and Milling

Ölsremma kyrka was extended eastward in the 19th century, when it acquired its present three-sided chancel. Åremma kvarn in Ölsremma dates from 1840; it was restored and fitted with a new waterwheel. Roof and façade shingles can still be made there. The dates have different meanings: for the church, they indicate when it was extended; for the mill, the year it dates from. In this way, church architecture and milling represent different aspects of local cultural history.

Storehouse and Torp Remains

The local heritage association’s storehouse, known locally as “boa,” illustrates the traditional layout of a farm storehouse. Grain was kept upstairs, while salted meat and flour were stored on the ground floor. The layout makes traditional food storage tangible: the story encompasses not only the building but also where and how supplies were stored. As part of the torp inventory, cast bronze plaques were mounted on rust-protected posts at each torp site. “Boa” and the torp remains offer different perspectives on local history: the interior of a storehouse and individual traces of farm settlements.

The Västerån as a River and Walking Route

The Västerån has a clearly defined course: near Åremma, it drains part of Komosse; from Åremma, it flows via Lagmanshagasjön and onward into the Nissan. Near Åremma, the river is also a landmark for a walk. You can walk upstream along the water and enjoy wide views over Västergötland and Småland on the return journey. The Västerån is thus both part of a longer watercourse and a reference point for a walk with expansive views.

Bohestramosse in Winter

Bohestramosse in Ölsremma is an extension of the Komosse Nature Reserve. The area is also suitable for cross-country skiing away from prepared trails. This activity is seasonal: snow and trail conditions determine whether a winter outing is suitable. So check current conditions in advance if you are planning to ski. Compared with the walk near Åremma, the main difference in planning is the time of year: the walk follows the river, while skiing at Bohestramosse also depends on winter conditions.
