In Dalstorp, hiking and local history offer two distinct ways to explore the area. The 35-kilometre Jälmåleden trail passes burial grounds from the Viking Age and Iron Age, as well as industrial ruins from the 19th century. Also worth seeing are Dalstorps kyrka and the old church site by Dalstorpasjön.

Jälmåleden: Hiking and History

The Jälmåleden trail runs through scenic surroundings. Along the route are burial grounds from the Viking Age and Iron Age, as well as industrial ruins from the industrial era of the 19th century. The river and lakes provide a landscape setting for the trail, while the burial grounds and ruins bring different historical periods into view.

Dalstorp is a recommended starting point for the Jälmåleden; there are plenty of parking spaces in the village. This means that both a named starting point and parking are accounted for in your planning. The 35-kilometre distance also helps you gauge the scale of the trail if you want it to be the focus of your stay.

Church Architecture and the Old Church Site

Dalstorps kyrka was built in 1964–65 to plans by Växjö architect Bent Jörgensen. It replaced a 19th-century church that was destroyed by fire in 1962. Its architectural history thus includes both the construction of the new church in the 1960s and the loss of its earlier predecessor.

The old church site dates back to the Middle Ages, placing it in a different historical period from Dalstorps kyrka. Together with the history of the former church, the churches of Dalstorp offer a perspective spanning a medieval site, a 19th-century building and the church of the 1960s.

Inside Dalstorps kyrka, black slate slabs, white brick and sandblasted pine shape the design. The bronze altarpiece is by artist Jörgen Martinsson. The contrast between dark slate and white brick brings the choice of materials to life; the pine and bronze add further materials and a distinctive work of art.

Dalstorps gamla kyrkplats is a medieval church site. The cemetery has been preserved at the old church site, where you can also see the surviving sacristy with a burial chamber beneath it. These features make the old church site a distinct point of cultural and historical interest alongside the church building from the 1960s.

Dalstorp’s cultural environment is of national interest. It includes the medieval church site and its abandoned churchyard, as well as industrial remains at the mouth of the Jälmån, including the remains of an ironworks. The area’s cultural heritage therefore extends beyond its churches: industrial heritage is also part of this cultural environment.

The different themes offer distinct ways to shape your stay: the Jälmåleden is a 35-kilometre hike with river and lake scenery and traces from different eras. At Dalstorps kyrka, the architecture, interior and altarpiece are the focus, while the old church site adds the preserved cemetery and sacristy. If you mainly want to hike, the Jälmåleden is an obvious choice; if you are interested in local history, the church sites and industrial remains offer further points of interest.
