Ytterby combines a coastal landscape with traces of cultural history. The Ulön-Dannemark Nature Reserve lies 300 metres west of the Ytterby S:5 planning area; within the planning area itself is the Bronze Age burial mound Svenneby 109:1.

Coastal Landscape and Activities

The Ulön-Dannemark Nature Reserve is well suited to kayaking and walks. This lets you experience the landscape both from the water and on foot; sandy beaches and several beautiful viewpoints over the archipelago add a different dimension. In Valön Nature Reserve, paths and boardwalks lead to the most attractive areas; there are also opportunities for swimming and fishing. The activities therefore differ: Ulön-Dannemark combines kayaking and viewpoints, while Valön offers paths and boardwalks as well as swimming and fishing.

Traces of Cultural History

Cultural history is evident at different scales. The Ytterby S:5 planning area is home to Svenneby 109:1, a Bronze Age burial mound. This differs from the assessments of entire holiday-home settings: the Alebacken holiday-home setting is classified as cultural-historic Class II – buildings of particular value – and is considered worthy of preservation. The Dammen holiday-home area is also classified as cultural-historic Class II – buildings of particular value. The burial mound thus represents a single archaeological site, while the classifications of Alebacken and Dammen apply to holiday-home settings.

Wet Meadows and Coastal Landforms

The 1989 nature inventory describes the area “Ytterby; Svenneby s:n”, inventory site 16, as a 2.5-hectare coastal wet meadow on the shallow shores within Keholmen, immediately north of Valön. It lists this area as landscape-protected and within areas of national interest for nature conservation and recreation. Inventory site 18 in the area “Ytterby; Svenneby s:n” comprises a 1.4-hectare coastal wet meadow and a strip of open land along a road southeast of Heestrand. It borders rocky areas and Sandbäckskilen. The two sites differ both in size and description: site 16 is characterised by its location on shallow shores within Keholmen; site 18 combines a wet meadow with open land and adjoining rocky areas. At 2.5 hectares, site 16 covers a larger area than site 18, which is 1.4 hectares; the latter also includes a strip of open land.

Getting Around the Planning Area

The Ytterby S:5 planning area is accessed from public road 889 at two points through adjoining residential areas. Narrow gravel roads, approximately 3 metres wide, run through the area; they shape its character and keep speeds low. A bathing spot lies west of the planning area, outside its boundaries. To get your bearings, distinguish between access to the planning area, the roads within it and the bathing spot outside it.
